Dashed stroke problem

Hello

I can't help thinking the answer to this must be staring me in the face but…

I have a path created with the paintbrush tool, which I'd like to make a dashed path using the settings under 'dashed line' in the stroke panel. However, no matter what I do the path remains a solid line.

If I draw a path with the pen, pencil or line segment tool then I can make it into a dashed path just as I'd expect, but not with the paintbrush tool. Am I missing something?

I'm in Illustrator CS6 (16.0.4) on Mac 10.8.2

Drawing with the paintbrush tool automatically assigns a brush (hence the name).

While some brushes can be dashed, the calligraphic brush can't. Most probably you have assigned it.
