Can't create or open files in Win8/CS6

Feb 13, 2013 10:04 AM

Tags: #photoshop #cs6 #windows_8_pro

I have CS6 running on Win8 pro and as of today I can’t get photoshop to open or create new files. It just essentially ignores me - no crash, and the menus are still available. It’s been working past few weeks though. I have tried rebooting at least 5 times and deleted my settings file (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT when starting). Nothing works. The cloud app says it is up to date.

I am running a GeForce GTX 560M and was running the latest released driver. I've tried installing their latest beta driver and got same results. Is there a log file somewhere I can check?

What else can I try?

Ron

In preferences if you uncheck the graphics processor do you see any changes?

Are you using two cards and two displays? (That's what I'm seeing in the system info).

It looks like the driver is defaulting back to "Microsoft Basic Render Driver" which may be the source of the problem.

    Interesting.

On my Windows 8 test VM I see a second "Video Card" based on the Microsoft Render Driver listed as well...  Note that I have two honest to goodness monitors enabled on that system, but both displays are on the first, er, second, er, main virtual video card.

We're getting the responses. Open a small image (a jpeg for example) after you open it, click on the Window menu. At the bottom of the menu, does it display the name of the file you tried to open?

Thanks. Looks like having OGL on is preferred, or a restart got the driver/settings aligned better.

I am having the same problem, for the past few months!

I had the problem in December and tried everyhting Adobe advised, created a new admin account, fiddled with my graphics settings etc etc.

    Finally it seemed to work.

But now the problem has resurfaced, I cant reinstall my computer every five minutes!

Did anyone come up with a solution for this issue???

Spawton, please do as Ron has done above:  Post your System Info.

When you "fiddled with your graphics settings", did you make sure and close and restart Photoshop after each change?  If you did not, it's possible you missed a combination of settings that worked, but you didn't see it work when you tested.

Ron, I know this could be disruptive, but have you tried a preferences clearing?  The press and hold Control-Shift-Alt immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop thing.

I'm starting to develop the thought that Photoshop could be storing some information derived from what it discovers about the GPU that only a preferences reset can clear up.  Something triggers it to store wrong information, possibly because of a resource issue or intermittent driver problem, and no matter whether the problem is cleared up it doesn't revisit the decision.

If you clear your preferences, you will, of course, have to re-make all your preferences changes that you like that are different than defaults.  I've made a note sheet so that if I have to do so I will remember to revisit all the right settings.

I have no idea whether Adobe plans to escalate this issue - you might want to call customer support on that to ensure it happens, and be ready for a potentially trying set of events.

I'm not criticizing, but I'm curious what made you choose to upgrade to Windows 8?  Did you have a compelling reason?

Many pros/enterprises wait until at least a service pack is released before adopting a new OS.  I've chosen to stay on Windows 7 myself for the time being.

If you're having trouble with the shortcut to kill prefs, try manually removing the folder/prefs. Instructions in this video:

    Hi Noel,

My problem is back again. I dont know what is causing it but it seems that a computer reboot usually fixes it, however I cant be restarting my machine every time I want to open a file!

Here is my system information, if you have any idea what might be causing this I would be very grateful!

I have just tried resetting the photoshop preferences but to no avail.

You suggested that maybe spaeking to customer services might be of use, is it worth me trying that?

    thanks

    Alex

IF it requires a machine reboot, it's an OS or hardware/driver problem.

And your video card driver is way out of date -- check with NVidia for updated drivers.

    Thanks for your response Chris,

I will update the NVidia drivers.

If it is an OS or hardware probelm what sort of action can I take?

    Alex

Without knowing what the exact problem is, I don't know.

You'll have to troubleshoot it on your system - but the video card driver is the most obvious possibility.

Chris, after downloading the new drivers the problem seems to have gone away.

I hope this is the end of the issue!

If it continues to work you are a star.

    cheers

I had a similar set of issues with photoshop cs6 on new install of Windows 7. After a reboot of the machine photoshop worked fine the first time but if reloaded, Photoshop wouldn't create a new file or open an existing file. I could drag an image in from Mini-Bridge but it would not save. I would have to either keep Photoshop open or reboot the machine any time I wanted to use Photoshop.

In my case this was not a preferences issue, GPU issue, nor even a photoshop issue. It was a permissions issue between Photoshop and the OS (Windows 7 64bit). With 7 and now with 8, Windows sometimes doesn't give you all the permissions it is supposed to when you set up the first user (an administrator by default) and using the "Run as Administrator options doesn't correct this.

To fix the problem I simply created a new user as an administrator and migrated my preferences and other setting over to the new user. The new user was given full permissions and Photoshop works just fine now.

You're kidding! I have to completely abandon my user profile and create a new one from scratch?

I have been having this problem for ages. I will leave Photoshop open while working on something, and ocme back to it and find Photoshop acting strangely, such as not able to do transforms. Then when I restart Photoshop, I can no longer open or create new files, with no error message. It works again after a reboot.

My GPU drivers are up to date, and resetting preferences and preventing plugins from loading didn't help.

How is this a permissions thing? Howcome it works on boot but not later? Where did you find this information out?

EDIT: I found this topic that reported this same issue with 4GB nVidia GTX 680 cards, which I have: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5465547

I come to the party rather late on this one but I spotted the discussion having had the "files won't open" issue on my Win8.1 PS CS6 machine today.  In the end it dawned on me that, being an avid "startup process tidyer", I'd recently disabled three processes namely:

    NVIDIA Capture Server Proxy

    NVIDIA NvTmru Application

    SwitchBoard Server (Adobe)

As soon as I re-enabled these my Photoshop functionality came back.  Not sure which of the above was responsible but maybe something to check if you run into the same problem.

I can tell you that Switchboard is not responsible; I haven't had that running since minutes after my Adobe installs and Photoshop opens files just fine.
