Spacebar problem

I have Adobe Illustrator CS6, and have encountered an odd problem. When I use the Text tool, I am able to type normally in most instances. However, when I try

to write a particular abbreviation (CI 1), the space is automatically removed (becoming CI1). While I am typing, I can see the space, but once the text is placed, it

disappears – but only on the artboard. I can see the space in the layers tab; what is going on?

    What is set up in OpenType features? Is it an OpenType font? You might want to show screenshots ...

    I usually use Arial or TNR, so yes, it's an open type font. I haven't changed any of the settings, so the OpenType features should all be the default settings. I think.
