Did you create a documetn, or just a Book? A Book (with a capital B) is a collection of documents (.indd files) and doen't do more than keep them organized and synchronized. All editing is done in the individual documents.
If you are thinking book (as in a manuscript you want to create) as a single file, then you want to create a new Document.
