How do I get my images into the layers panel?

I can only get one image at a time into the layers panel. If I go to ‘new layer’ it shows a chequered image only. How can I bring my other images into this panel?

I know it is probably elementary, but I’m just learning.

    The checkerboard pattern signifies emptiness.

     

    You can get other images into a file by

    • copy/pasting them,

    • dragging them to the other image (from the Canvas or the Layers Panel),

    • File > Place,

    • File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack (for multiple files),

    Use the move tool and click in the center of your image.  Then drag and hold it over the tab of the image you'd like to add a layer too.  When the second image opens, just drop it on top of your other image and it will display in the layer panel:
