Available RAM is wrong

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 17" that used to have 8 GB of RAM. Two weeks ago I installed a 16 GB memory kit, and the OS recognizes all of it, but PSE does not.

I just discovered that the Performance pane only shows 3072 MB available, no matter how much is actually free. Is this normal, or is there something I can do to make PSE see the entire 16 GB?

    PSE is a 32 bit application therefore it can only use a limited amount of RAM (approx 3.2 GB) , that's why it is so.

    It's normal. PSE is only a 32bit application so can't use the extra RAM on 64 bit systems but it usually runs well.

     

    Lightroom 4 has 64 bit support.

    Damn, that was fast!

     

    I searched for posts containing available ram, and also Googled for an answer but didn't find anything helpful. Surely this has been answered here before, probably many times!

    Well, I hope this helps the next user with this question.

    I use Win7 64 bit with 16Gb of RAM and have found that by running that slider to allow PSE 11 to use the max amount of memory rather than leaving it somewhere around 60% utilization improves my performance noticeably. Win 7 has 16GB of memory to operate -- it is ONLY PSE that can only see 3.2Gb of RAM. There is no noticeable decrement in other programs operation be they 32 bit or 64 bit with the slider in PSE at full max.

    I am anxiously awaiting PSE12, IF IT IS 64bit, otherwise I will change to an organizer/editor that is.
