Imported illustrator files. The Case of the Disappearing Apostraphes.

Text characters (Helvetica neue - apostrophes ' ) disappear when printed. Blank spaces where the apostraphe should be. The text is in imported/placed illustrator files.

Other files with the same format show the apostraphe. The illustrator artwork has 4 layers with the text on its own layer. CS4.

    Were the Illustrator files saved as EPS or as AI files?

     

    How does the artwork print out of Illustrator?

    A Google search produced a thread from this forum for InDesign CS4 describing the same problem. If you read through the thread, it appears that you need to update InDesign to 6.0.4.

    Thanks, I'm using InDesign 6.0.6. It wasn't only PDF/X, the actual InDesign pages show a blank space where the apostrophes are as well. I noticed the missing characters when I printed with a desktop printer.

    So it sounds like the bug/problem might be in the AI file and not in InDesign. That's a tough one to track down. Is your Illustrator updated to the latest version of the release?

    Did you, since you are on a Mac, use the system version of Helvetica Neue? The system version has been (uh) "improved" by Apple, with some weird incompabilities as a result.

     

    Much as I hate to say it, if you don't have an alternative font, maybe -- this one time -- tou might want to outline your text in Illustrator. Take care to keep a copy with editable text.

    Illustrator 14.0.0. I just changed the typeface in Illustrator and saved - the missing apostrophe has reappeared on the corresponding (link) Indesign page image.

    Seems like there might have been a 14.0.1 update, too, so you might want to check.
