Problem with User Authentication (CS4)

I created a log in page which connects to a phpMySQL database. I know that the log in is successful because I am redirected to the homepage rather than the log in page. However, I when I try to echo the MM_Username session variable, nothing shows up. I then went onto one of my old sites and tried logging in. It was successful, but the text that is supposed to be visible for logged in users isn't. I last used this site around a year ago and there were no problems, now it seems like the website can't remember the session variables. Any ideas?

(I'm using CS4)
