I created a new catalogue for photos from the new year onwards. I am using the same Adobe version 8 and computer as before. I then imported photos to the new catalogue and tagged them. I deleted any keywords tags headings that I no longer needed in the new catalogue. however I went to my old last year's catalgue today only to find 1:any photos tagged under headings I deleted in the new catalogue are not there and 2:all the tags and keywords are missing for the photos that are still there,. So basically nothing is tagged anymore and most of the photos are missing from photoshop!! How can I get them back?
I have not moved any images at all, and have done nothing in explorer. All I did was delete tags i no longer needed in the new catalogue, yet it removed them from the OLD catalogue and any photos associated with it.
Yes Deleted only tags. no photos. i know the photos are still on the hard drive. but
1. I dont really want to have to re-import the 3 thousand or so photos back into my PSE only to have to retag them all.
2.The new catalogue is to organise this years photos only.
3. The photos that are still remaining in the old catalogue have been untagged.
Any useful advice welcome!
How are you confirming that the tags are not on the images anymore? Did you try filtering one such tag and got empty results even when you expected some images?
It's possible that the tags are still on the files but somehow, View >> Details has been turned off due to which you are unable to see tags below image thumbnails. Please check if that's the case.
Thabnks for reply.
Details are on.
I have had another look are there are duplicate tag categories now, i.e. now there are 3 x places, 3 x people etc. I clicked on the different ones and now the tags are showing in the main screen. So for the photos that are there, the tags are back.
The keyword tag categories that I deleted from the NEW catalogue are no longer listed on this old catalogue. And the photos that were within these categories are now missing. At the bottom of the screen it says I have 1200 photos in total, but I had well over 4 000 photos originally. Therefore when i edited the new Catalogue it had an effect on the old catalgue, with loosing my links to photos and all the tags.
Just to let you know, the two catalogs exist independent of each other. If you click File >> Manage Catalogs >> you should be able to see both of the catalog. The keyword tags in the new one should ideally be present if not deleted expicitly.
Please check if the 4000 photos are shown up in the New catalog. If yes, see if the photos are missing?
If yes, then try reconencting to original photos on the hard disk by locating their location.
Hi, I know they are seperate.
just to reiterate.
I created the new catalogue and copied the keyword tag names from my old catalogue to the new one. I did this becuase I had set up a good filing system listing things like holidays, birthdays, evets that are common etc. And I didnt want to have to create them all again in the new catalogue. I then deleted ones I did not need from the NEW CATALOGUE, ie speficic holiday names that we wouldnt be repeating etc,
When i went back to my OLD catalogue, the photos under the keyword tags I deleted from the NEW one (eg Tenerife holiday 2012) were all missing.
the photos are on the hardrive still.
But I have spent hours tagging my photos in the old catalogue over the last year. I cannot face doing it all again.
I did nothing to the OLD catalgue, yet the changes I made to the new one have effected the OLD one.
So they cannot be truely independant. yet it says nothing about that anywhere.
i just want to be able to see all my photos again in the OLD catalogue, with the appropriate tags.
Apparently there's no reason why it would do so. Since you already have the older keyword tag list, we may try one thing.
Please check your catalog location in Help >> System Info. Now go to this location, it will be be something like ...\My Catalog Old\ (Say the catalog folder is "My Catalog Old")
Please copy paste it this folder at the same location so that now you have two folders- My Catalog Old and My Catalog Old Copy
This way, we have created a backup of your original catalog. Now Launch Organizer and open the catalog "My Catalog Old Copy" using File >> Manage Catalogs.
Try importing keyword tags from the tags xml you used earlier. From Edit >> Preferences >> Files, tick the checkbox for "automatically reconnect missing files".
Also, re-import the files which you are seeing as, deleted from the catalog. They should be reconnected on import.
Let's see if the tag associations come back on import.
I have already tried reimporting the tags xml file I used before. So I now have the tag keywords listed again, but they are empty. I now have duplicate headings of places, events, people. It doesnt overrite them it adds them to the bottom of the list.
"automatically reconnect missing files" was already ticked
So I tried importing the photos with on of the directories of photos as test, and sadly they dont reconnent.
So that didnt work, sorry
If the files are same, they should have reconnected.
As of now, all I can suggest is delete the last import batch of files which you imported just now. And try reconnecting files manually with their counterparts on the disk. I know its tedious but that's the only option left imo.
It's always advisable to take catalog backup from time to time to avoid such situations.
