Selecting multiple layers

I'm trying to select multiple layers in the layers panel on a Mac. I normally do 'command-click' and it works to select many layers. Now, it doesn't work. When I click the second layer, it draws a marquee around it. I need to select multiple layers in order to drop shadow many layers at the same time.

    Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing? Press command+shift+4 and drag over the layers panel, and the screenshot will appear on your desktop. Then come to the forum's web page and use the camera icon above the message composition area to post it here.

    I've taken the screen shot but it's not very helpful. The cursor goes away when I take the shot. That's the most important part.

    What I see when I'm holding command and hovering over a layer is the hand with one finger pointing up, but on the back of the hand is a rectangle marquee.

    If it helps, when I hit 'undo' it says 'Undo Load Selection'

    I had pse 7 before and it was never a problem. For the first three days of my trial I haven't had this issue either.
