Moving this discussion to the Photoshop Elements forum.  Do you know what version of Camera RAW you currently have installed?  Also what version of Windows are you using?

You need at least version 5.4 (up through 5.6) of Adobe Camera Raw. Download, install, and you should be able to open your .CR2 tfiles.

Hi Mike, for the 550d you need PSE7 or above, preferably PSE11. You have two alternatives for processing your CR2 files:

    (1) Upgrade to PSE 11. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)

Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.3

Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.3

You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

You Tube click here for DNG Converter tutorial

Try this download. It says for PSE8 but I believe it works also with PSE6.

Did you delete the existing Camera Raw.8bi file before dragging in the new one from the unzipped download folder?

It definitely works because I have ACR 5.6 installed with PSE6 (click image below)

Delete or move the existing Camera Raw 8bi file (see below) from the File Formats Folder.

Click and download the ACR5.6 plug-in from the above link (it says PSE8 but will definitely work with PSE6 also)

Open the zip folder you downloaded and click Extract Files.

You should see the plug-in file you need. The plug in has a file name: Camera Raw.8bi

Now drag the plug-in file (or copy it) into the File Formats folder in the following location:

    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats

If you are using a 64-bit edition of Windows, move and install the plug-in file by navigating to:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\Plug-Ins\File Formats
