Noob compound paths problem

Ok so trying out making a basic shape and totally failing to get the damn thing to fill right.  Any tips most welcome!

    Tom,

     

    You seem to have 3 open paths: one at the top and one at either side. You may try to drag over each of the corners of what seems to be a triangle with the Direct Selection Tool and press Ctrl/Cmd+J to join them. Hopefully that will give you a full heart.

    You actually have 5 seperate filled paths as shown here.

    Start by releasing the group. Then select the straight line segements of the 5 paths and delete.

    Then select everything and use Cmd(Ctrl)-J twice to make a closed path.
