Shading (vs. transparency)

Hi all! I've done searches looking for how to do this, but I keep getting stuff that's way more complicated than I'm looking for. I guess the word "Shading" is what's throwing off my search.

 

Anyway, in InDesign... you can take a solid color... and you can make it 50% transparent. You call also make it a 50%

shade of the original color (which, then, is not see-through). How do I do shading in Illustrator? I can only seem to make a color 50% by applying transparency to it.
