3D Concave Effect to Achieve Hollow-Donut Look

3D Donut.pngI am trying to achieve a 3D hollowed-out effect to get a tube or empty donut look. This is the file that I am working on. The intended effect is a 3D quarter pipe that looks hollow and concave, so that it's caving indwards away from the viewer. As you can see, it's not perfect because I am only using 2D shapes with gradients and inner glow effects. Is there a way to create a realistic and authentic concave look for this hollow pipe/cylinder in Illustrator CS5?  Thanks!

You just move the light stroke as you wish to control the ‘lighting’.

…how would I make it in the shape of a perfect quarter-circle? … it's supposed to be in the bottom right hand corner…

It is a quarter circle (90°). Just orient it that way in the 3D Effect dialog.

I fiddled around with the settings in the 3D dialog box and came up with this (see scree shot of dialog box and result below). Is this what you need?

    Try this for size:

    Picture 3.png

This was done with the double stroke method.

Outer lines for pipe thickness done separately by outlining a copy of the thick line.

Then a clipping mask to cut the thing properly.

Note how you can control the lighting by offsetting the 2 paths.
