Can't create an action to tile windows

Tags: #actions

As I've done with so many other actions before, I am using Insert Menu Item. But when I choose Window>Arrange>Tile, it doesn't fill in that item. I've tried typing "tile" in the Insert Menu Item dialog, and clicking Find, but that results in Effect> Texture> Mosaic Tiles. Which is not the item I want

Why can't I choose Window>Arrange> Tile? Or, is there a workaround?

CS5 Mac OS 10.6.8

I am not sure If I can understand what you saying. "Window>Arrange>Tile" is something that has to do with your workspace and " Effect> Texture> Mosaic Tiles" is an effect. These two are totally irrelevant. What exactly you want to do? apply an effect or arrange your workspace in a tile layout?

forget Actions for a second, can you tile your windows manually? I just grabbed hold of a mac for a couple of minutes and found out I could only tile them when all document windows were 'floating', I had to go Window->Float All in Window, before Tiling them...I did not had a chance to try the recording part...

I don't think it can be scripted, I couldn't find anything related in the Documentation.

I can't get anything in the Widnow Arrange options to record or insert into an Action in CS6/Mac. If I use the find command, it doesn't even find the arrange options.

It's a typical example. Illustrator too often missed to comprise every command inside its actions model.

Is this just a Windows thing?

I’ve never heard of tiling windows on a Mac and it’s certainly not under Window in the menu.

Not quite sure how you would use it - just curious.

Steve, Window > Arrange > Tile/Cascade. Only works if windows are floating and not tabs.

it supposed to be used to compare documents, not sure if anyone actually uses this feature though. I remember it was one of the "hot" features Microsoft advertised when it went from DOS to Windows

that's all wanted in your action? one single command?

have you tried assigning a shortcut key to the Tile command? that works too in windows

My windows are just ordinary windows.

Presumably what you call floating - you just grab them by their top edges and move them around.

I have never heard of making them into tabs.

And I haven’t got Arrange in my Window menu.
