PSE 11 won't quit when I quit the application. It stays in memory and force quit shows it not responding. I can't shut my system down unless I force quit PSE 11 first.
Well, it's baaaaack!
The problem reappeared after a few uses of PSE11. Here's what I found:
I think there is something corrupt in my catalog because when I imported all the same files into a new catalog, the problem does not reappear. (yet) So that's a good thing.
However all my keywords that I had 'save metadata to files' are gone in the new catalog. The captions are still there.
I have thousands of keywords, how do I retrieve these?
Also not all the video thumbnails are created, only about 25% of all video thumbnails are there after an import. MOV, mp4 and m4v.
In the new catalog, I see the proper keyword tags that were attached in the old catalog in IPTC but the keywords are not shown on the screen nor can I sort on the key tag.
If the keywords are there in the database why can't I see the tag on the picture?
The tags which are there in image IPTC aren't there in database. They are actually a part of the image. If you want other images to have this tag or tag to appear in tag panel/with images in grid, you need to create the tag again.
Ok, I'm confused about where various pieces of information are kept and how they are handled.
Looks like the tags are written to the image IPTC metadata and also to some other database file in PSE. Once the image leaves PSE and then is imported back say into different catalog, the tag information only exist in IPTC and the tag itself is lost. Is that right? Can't PSE be made to read the IPTC information and recreate the tag? Sure would save a lot of effort if you have thousands of images.
The image description, also written to the IPTC database, on the other hand travels with the image in and out of whatever catalog it's brought into. Is that correct?
Let me explain this using a scenario. Suppose you have a JPEG (from your camera). As of now it won't have any tag info into IPTC. You imported this image into Organizer. Now you created a tag and applied on this image. At this point of time the tag is only in PSE catalog db file. Also if you import the same image into another catalog, it won't have any tag info in its IPTC.
To write a tag (from pse catalog db file) to image's IPTC, you need to use 'File->Write keyword tag and properties info to Photos' for PSE10 and previous versions (File->Save keyword tag to metadata info' in PSE11). Once you do this, the tag is now present in both catalog as well as in image IPTC info'. Now if you import this image into any other PSE catalog, it will show the tag written in its IPTC but not present in this new catalog'
let me know if you need more clarification.
I had the same problem. Since I only need one photo editing suite, here's what I did. There might have been a conflict somewhere.
1. I uninstalled: Lightroom 4, The Gimp, PS CS2, Nikon NX2, PSE 8.
2. I went to "Utilities" and under disk maintenance repaired "Permissions"
3. I shut down and re-booted.
So far, so good.
