I am working on an image in Illustrator that has several layers; not a lot...around seven layers with a total file size of 10.3 MB.
I am working on a Windows 7 64-bit PC with 6 GB of Ram, 2.80 Ghz processor. Things have been going fine until recently.
I'm trying to "tweak" my artwork to send out for digital printing, but every time I click on a layer to work with the pen tool, the machine slows down, the artwork "freezes" and I keep gettting messages that "windows is not responding". It's as if my machine needs to "think about it".
I plan on taking my machine in this week to get serviced, but I need to get this artwork finished and out the door. Can anyone help?

There may be different reasons for the slowdown.
It may help the helpers help you to know the nature of the artwork (just one (maybe little) thing is that when you toggle visibility of a layers, some live effects may be rendered).
I take it you have all layers visible at the same time. The rendering was just an (obviously irrelevant) example of what might eat time (if you make a layer visible, things like complicated blends and live effects (Drop Shadows or whatever) may take a bit of time to appear).
With that ruled out, some description of the artwork may (still) be useful.
