Hi, I've been working on a large illustrator file in CS4 ( 3.88GB ). It's been saving fine but Ive gone to open it after a few days and I keep getting the "cannot open illustration, Cannot complete the requested operation". When I right click on the .ai file it still says the file size is 3.88 GB.
I've tried opening it on Adobe Acrobat and it just opens as a blank document. I've tried 'placing' it in an open blank Illustrator file and in the preview dialogue box I can see all the artwork in the file in the preview screen however when I select 'place' it just appears as a blank box.
I've tried these steps both on my Macbook Pro in CS4 and also on an iMac with CS6 but nothing seems to work. Please help!
I go file > place... and select the .ai file...
Actually, that is no answer to the innocent question from Kurt: when you File>Place and select the file, you can have Link ticked or unticked in the options.
You may start looking at recovery methods as the ones described in these links (although the cases dealt with differ form yours, you may do something similar):
It is difficult work, but it may be worth it.
Working with the code, one specific way is to create a new empty document and create some very simple artwork in a copy of it (to see where the actual contents go), then move code from the corrupt file into the empty document and see what may be recovered that way.
Hopefully, this will appear less woolly once you start on it.
Edit: almost an hour after midnight here so I have to attend to other duties. The very best of luck.
That's the question! It make the recovery methods impossible, as the recovered file(if you are lucky to even get it)'s filesize will be almost 5+GB, so you could not even open it with a textediter.
And, I know the "Can't open illustration, cannot complete requested operation" massage well, as I have deal with this problem for a long time. Briefly, there normally have no recoverable AI data in the file, except the embed PDF part(Sadly this also is empty in your file).
So how did you get this huge size file? Embed a lot of large images, and checked the "Create PDF Campatible File" option when saving document, right?
My suggestion is: no more do it like that!
