Everytime I try to import my mpg file into Premiere, I get the error saying: "There was an error decompressing audio or video."

The File Opens fine in After Effects. Please Help.

Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037

    What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811

What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037

    .

Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... A screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

    .

    For PC http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en or http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

    For Mac http://mediainspector.massanti.com/

    Welcome to the forum.

What are the full specs., both Audio & Video, in your MPEG files?

    Good luck,

    Hunt

Can you open that file with Media Encoder?

First, I don't see any particular reason why you

can't open this file in Premiere.

But, in the interest of moving ahead with the edit,

you might consider using Media Encoder to flip it

    to another edit-friendly codec:

    Lagarith Lossless Video Codec

    http://lags.leetcode.net/codec.html

    Ut Video Codec Suite

    http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Ut-Video-Codec-Suite

    Avid Codecs 2.3.7 - DNxHD

Are you on a pc or mac?

Lagarith & Ut are 'lossless' at the expense of larger files.

DNxHD is 'virtually lossless', also larger files.

    Pick a codec (I lean to Ut on a pc), download and install;

then bring your .mpg into Media Encoder and transcode

the file to that codec and you are off and running.

    note:

Lagarith is pc only - .avi

    Ut is cross-platform - .avi / .mov

    DNxHD is cross-platform - .mov

    All three codecs are free.

    edit:

As you transcode your file, be sure to match

the frame size / aspect ratio / frame rate of the original.

    >Overall bit rate mode                    : Variable

As far as I know, PPro does not do well (if at all) with trying to edit a variable bit rate file

PP actually does fine with VBR MPEG.

    Here's what I'd check.

FAQ: Why are some codecs and sequence presets missing from my installation of Premiere Pro?

    Yes, that's a no-no.

That is what I thought that you were referring to, as well.
