Selection of non-filled objects

I have an object that has a stroke but no fill.  When I try to select an object below this object, though the non-filled area, it selects this top object instead.  I swear this wan't happening yesterday or any time before this.  Can anyone tell why this is happening?  Please?

Running CS6 on Mac OS 10.8.3

It's because it's above everything else. To select deeper to objects below you need to press and hold (CTRL/CMD) and click down.
