FrontPage to Dreamweaver migration (Was: Dreamweaver CS6)

Apr 21, 2013 8:15 AM

I have an extensive existing website in FrontPage and recently purchased Dreamweaver CS6. I have found articles on your site w/instructions on conversions, but they do not specifically name CS6 in those instructions.  Are there different instructions for this version of Dreamweaver?

    What's the current website address?

Can you provide links to the articles you've been reading so we can see how current or out-of-date the information might be?

There's a similar discussion that I found that could probably help you.

Just build a new site in Dreamweaver.  FP code isn't worth salvaging.

Start by defining your Local Site Folder.  Go to Site > New Site...  See screenshots:

Go to File > New > Blank page > HTML > Layout.  Select a pre-built CSS layout from the 3rd panel.  Hit Create.

    CS6-NewLayout.jpg

    Save as prototype.html

Add your own content & CSS styles.

Preview in Browsers.  Validate code & fix  errors.

    Code Validation Tools

    ------------------------------------

    CSS - http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/

    HTML - http://validator.w3.org/

    1. When you are completely satisfied with this prototype page, File > SaveAs Template.
    2. Add Editable Regions for content that will change from page to page.
    3. Save Template and close it.
    4. File > New Page from Template.  This is a child page.  SaveAs index.html
    5. Repeat step 4 for other site pages.

Copy & paste content from old site  into new site.  Use Edit > Paste Special > Text only.  Ideally, you want to strip out any HTML and proprietary FP code from the old site.

    1. When your new site pages are all created, open your Template.dwt file and add a menu with links to other site pages.
    2. Save Template.  DW will ask if you want to populate changes to child pages.  Hit Yes.  Close Template.
