Why is there a "Make Offline" option?

Apr 21, 2013 6:41 PM

On page 213 the manual explains how to use "Make Offline". That's fine, but the explanation is not full enough for my liking.

1. Why does this option exist? What use is it? I can see that it's a way to delete an unwanted clip from disk (if that option is selected), but other than that…

2. As a test, I made a file offline – but there is no "Make Online", other than me remembering where the file was and navigating there. Can Premiere take me directly to an offline file to make it online again?

It is not compulsory to use any or all the options in Premiere if they dont suit you or are not to your liking.

Off lining a clip with the abilty to clear it from the drive is a great option. (Which I use a lot)

Some editors use it when they are using a place holder clip.

Some editors might use it when they dont want Premiere to go searching for a clip..eg on a temp drive.
