Sidecar .xmp for a DNG file ...

Apr 22, 2013 1:01 PM

Photoshop CS6 Reference says that "When a DNG file is processed in Camera Raw, the settings are stored in the DNG file itself, but they can be stored in a sidecar XMP file instead." How can I store the changes made to a DNG file in a sidecar file? Thanks.

You can't, the changes are stored in the dng.

Any sidecar for a dng file will be ignored, easy to prove.

Take any raw file and set the brightness to something silly, save the changes, then rename the xmp file to that of a dng filename. open the dng in ACR and see what changes have been made.

One way to do it is to make the DNGs read only.

For a long time I have been hoping (and asking) for Adobe to offer configuration options so as to avoid writing into ANY kind of file, but to use the sidecar XMP or central database instead.  I'm not so concerned about DNGs as out-of-camera JPEGs, but the same concept would apply to your request.

To date they seem to believe that inconsistency is best.
