Photoshop CS6 locks up the computer while doing a few things.

I have been battling this issue since I installed CS6 on this machine. I have been able to reproduce this lock up consistantly using the Lighting Effects, and I can also get it to lock up while using the Lasso tool, and also setting guides, but those are less consistant. I have tried to switch the advanced graphics options around too. It is currently on normal though. I currently have the GeForce Drivers v. 320.14 installed, which at the time of this post is the most rtecent stable build. I have followed basically every post or suggestion I could find on the web to solve this issue, but nothing works as of yet. I have even gone so far as to try every GeForce driver from 295.73 to 320.14 with no luch at resolution. Some of the drivers let me get a little further with the lighting effects, but still eventually lock up the computer... Currently I have had to uninstall Photoshop and then re-install it just to get PDF export to work right, but even after updating to the newest version of PS, I still get these lockups.

Please let me know what I am missing here.

Here are the rest of my specs just in case.

First thing click on Help/update and get latest version.  You are on 13.0 and should be 13.0.1. I belive.

If the whole machine is locking up: you have hardware problems, OS bugs, or low level driver bugs.

The most common causes are bad RAM, bad video cards, bad motherboards, bad power supplies, and bad CPUs.

Revxhoil, It's not because Photoshop triggers the symptom that it is its cause. I remember that Asus had to make a revision of one of its motherboards because Photoshop revealed a fault in their memory traces.

Chris has read more bug reports than I've posted messages here, you can trust his jugement.

Not only that, but Chris Cox has been writing Photoshop code for some two decades.

The worst attitude any user who is experiencig a problem can have is pretending to argue with him instead of following his advice so the problem can be found and solved.

The fallacy in the OP's logic is his assigning the blame for his problem to the application instead of the factor that triggers the problem in that particular application.

Not quite two decades, only 16.5 years.

Remember that Photoshop is highly optimized code, and moves around a lot of memory (because images are big) -- that tends to stress the memory system more than most other applications (though After Effects and Premiere come close).    Several manufacturers even use Photoshop as a stress test for their system designs - because it exposes marginal hardware (RAM, CPU, motherboard designs, etc.).

And yes, we've seen this before - which is why I listed the most common causes.

For me, it's definitely associated with switching to the brush tool, or eraser tool (in brush mode). Don't have the hanging issue with other tools in Photoshop CS6. I have seen other posts related to hanging with the brush tool. Any fix on the horizon?

Applications cannot cause the system to shut down, hang, or reboot -- only OS bugs, low level driver bugs, and hardware faults can cause that.

No, Photoshop cannot fix your bad hardware.

This is most likely video card/driver issue.  If you use huge brushes any card will bog down.

I did not have this problem in CS5 (or CS4). The hardware is bad with PS CS6 but okay with CS5? I admitedly don't have your knowledge-- are you saying that the hardware is being taxed differently in CS6 and the hardware is not up to the challenge? Is that correct? Just trying to understand...

All I have to do is switch to the brush tool (or a tool where a brush is an option), before any changes in brush size.

Yes, the hardware could be taxed differently - especially if the culprit is your video card.

Correction noted.  It's hard to believe that you've contributed so much in less than 20 years.

To be more accurate, from now on I'll try to remember to use "since the last millennium" instead.

    Hi revxoilproducts

Just a thought, but have you tried taking out the Graphics Card and using the onboard Graphics Card to see if the problem still exist, at least that way you could rule out the Graphics Card, also try taking out the Memory modules and reseating them one at a time and testing Photosop again.
