When backing up the catalog, what exactly gets saved?

    Two things:

    - all your images

    - your catalog (the database and its associated files like caches)

     

    The catalog is physically located in its own folder; you can find its location in the menu help/system info.

    All your images means all the images (stills or videos) entered into your catalog. The catalog is just like a list or a register book, it contains the links to the real location of each image you have in your catalog. That means the original images as well as the new versions created from them in editor, provided you have checked the option to 'include in the organizer'. If you have image files which have not been 'registered / entered' into your catalog (list), they won't be saved. The backup lets you restore everything which is in your catalog.
