Why does it take over 2 1/2 hours for photo  cropping to be completed?  I gave up at that time.

This is fantastic. Not only does the cropping function not work, now I have to figure out how to get my question her to post.

The crop tool normally works instantly.

What are you doing> are you using PSE11?

That service suddenly putting only 1/2 of my photo on the screen,

Do you mean 'cropping' (cutting part of a picture) or 'resizing' (to fit the screen) ?

Anytime a function takes more than a half minute, and that would be a really long time for PSE to do a function, there is something wrong.  I shut down both PSE and the computer and that usually fixes it.  If the problem persists, reset the preferences.

Look here for info about resetting preferences.

If resetting preferences doesn't work - it's time to reinstall.

If that doesn't work - it's time to look into the specs of your computer.

I have used PSE4, PSE9, PSE 11 and CS3 -  and have never had difficulty with any version.  PSE is usually a stable program.  Anytime there is such a drastic problem and resetting preferences and reinstalling doesn't work, it's more likely it's something other than PSE itself.
