    var radicand:Number = b*b-4*a*c;

    if(radicand>=0){

    var rad:Number = Math.sqrt(radicand);

    var x1:Number = (-b+rad)/(2*a);

    var x2:Number = (-b-rad)/(2*a);

    } else {

    rad= Math.sqrt(-radicand);

    var s1:String = (-b/(2*a))+"+i"+(rad/(2*a));

    var s2:String = (-b/(2*a))+"-i"+(rad/(2*a));

    }

    You would have to handcraft it so that the input fields and symbols can dynamically adjust to user input.

    for a simple one-off formula like that, just import a screenshot like you showed in your message.  otherwise, you need to use a font that includes mathematical symbols.
