When using line tools the keyboard shortcuts such as spacebar don't work.

Is there a setting that I need to change to facilitate this?  This is also true in my shapes...

    Are you using Illustrator 10?

The Line tool is nearly as useless as the Arc tool.

You would do better to use the Pen tool with all its possibilities.

The Line Tool makes a far better measuring tool than the Measure Tool.

The Line Tool also lets you define a single-segment straight path in terms of length and angle in one step--a basic and critical need.

Assuming you've also got InDesign: Do you see the same issue there?

The question was not whether the line tool was useful, it was "why do the shortcuts not work"?

This is a long-shot, but I've noticed if I assign a custom keyboard shortcut, using the "Keyboard Shortcuts" menu and inadvertantly type a shortcut that's already in use, AI disables the original shortcut even if I choose a different shortcut for the current tool. Just today I had to go back and re-assign some shortcuts in AICS5 after this happened.

BTW… I use the line tool to good effect regularly. To each his/her own.

No problem with the shortcuts here.

    Which system do you use?

What kind of keyboard and mouse?

    A Wacom?

As this is kind of related: what happens if you shut down apps that make an internet connection - like browsers, e-mail ...

    Ishibashi,

You may try to open possible troublemaking applications to find the guilty one(s) so you can have the others running.
