I spent the morning do Massive edits, renames, and photo ordering on some 700 pictures. Suddenly, my computer went down. When I rebooted, my LR4 opened up my last backup- which was yesterday. Now I cannot find ANY of the work I did all morning. Is it gone, or somewhere I don't know about. HELP!!! This is a massive, massive bummer!! I'm sitting here totally freaked out.
Any help would be so incredibly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
Did you look for catalog file with today's date?
I would first try looking in Lightroom, File->Open Recent (probably the 2nd one on the list, as the first one is likely to be the one you just opened)
If its not there, I would use your operating system to search for *.LRCAT files with today's date. You may find several (the one you were hoping to find, and yesterday's that you just opened will now have today's date)
By the way, how do you know it was yesterday's backup that got opened?
K. When I opened LR after the crash, I noticed the pictures were not the ones I had been working on when the computer went down. So I did look in LR, File - Open Recent before I tried anything else. It only showed yesterdays date and some others. So I clicked on yesterdays date. Well when I started looking around my catalog, that is when I really noticed all the question marks and gray boxes all over the place and freaked out.
Then I looked at my LR backups. Only yesterday's date - the 25th showed as the last date. So I opened it from there, and the same thing happened - question marks all over and gray boxes for missing pictures. Some of which I KNOW were no the ones I had deleted.
Is there perhaps another place in my LR files that you know of where I can possibly recover all my work?
Hmmm... I don't think I was writing metadata, but I certainly could have been. I mean, that happens every time changes are made, and I was certainly using the metadata panel for changing naming structures and files, etc.
Now, when you ask if I was actually using my operating system to search for the .LRCAT files, I can't say for sure. I simply looked in my LR backups and double clicked on the last date listed, which was yesterday. That automatically opened LR to yesterday's catalog.
But, I just ended up sitting there for the rest of the day and searched through my recycle bin and found deleted copies, and rebuilt the catalog. It was a nightmare. But fortunately, I had saved a bunch of the catalog in different files and was able to re-create what I needed. Out of nearly 800 pictures, I only truly lost one processed image, but the unrecognized file names and gray boxes sent me on a VERY complicated goose chase all day. Still, I think I'll do a backup more than at shut down after I've done so much work. This experience has been a hideous waste of time.
Anyway, thanks for your help. You've been very kind.
