Why does selection within an image detail automatically select inverse, Photoshop CC

When I wish to select a detail within an image and right click to make the selection Photoshop CC automatically selects the inverse of the image, including the entire canvas. The edges of the canvas are not always visible when working in close-up. This has resulted in some close calls when appling color or airbrushing.  I have tried opening Photoshop as administrator hoping it would correct this irritating trait that Photoshop has developed all by itself. Grrr!

Please explain what you are doing exactly and provide a screenshot with the pertinent Panels and Option Bar visible.

Hello, I attach screen shots of problem.

Images attached to email-replies are useless, please post in the browser.

Are you trying to load the transparency of a Layer by cmd/ctrl-clicking its icon in the Layers Panel?

Can you see that I have selected the side of the church  with the aim of increasing the moonlight on it.

    Please post the image.

after outlining the church with the pen and clicking in the selection option

I had asked you to describe what you do on post one and you now finally mention you are working with Paths?

Please provide a screenshot with the Paths Panel visible.

If you select one of the path items what is its Shape Operation as indicated in the Options Bar?

Are you talking about Quick mask perhaps?  I notice you said that the seleted area has become reversed, which is an option for Quick mask.  If so, then double click the Quick mask icon near the bottom of the tool bar, and set the option the way you like it.

When you work with Paths the Shape Operation is crucial to resulting Selections.

    What is it currently?

I posted a screenshot of the a section of the browser as you should see it when you reply in the browser where the camera icon is marked in red.

Please click that icon in your browser.

If you are talking about Selections created from Paths check the Path Operations in the Options Bar for the individual subPathItems or before you create a Path.
