Help with working on two versions of LR (4/5)

I have students at a university where the computers have Lightroom 4 installed. Many of the students have Lightroom 5 at home. Is there a good method for these students for working with their images between two catalog versions of Lightroom?

    No.

Lightroom 5 catalogs cannot be read in LR4.

The best you can do is write the LR5 metadata to XMP and transfer that back and forth in either the photo files or sidecar files, but even so, the new features in LR5 will not be understood in LR4, and some metadata (collections, edit history, stacks, pick flags and a few other things) cannot be transferred in this manner.

Going in the other direction, Lightroom 4 to Lightroom 5, use File->Export as Catalog in LR4 and then File->Import from Another Catalog in LR5.
