Why are .wav audio files muffled?

All my audio files are extremely muffled when I bring them into Premiere.   The files were fine in Final Cut Pro and are studio recorded .wav files.   They are only muffled in Premiere and aren't even legible.   Why is this?   Can Premiere not process standard .wav files?    I see that Premiere brings in video clips with audio and also brings the audio in separate as well -- not sure why it does this, but it creates double the files.   The duplicate audio files on their own are muffled and terribly distorted.

Premiere can process WAV files. Can you post the technical details for the WAV files? Bit rate, codec, bit depth etc?
