Photoshop 7 not compatible with Windows 8

Oct 5, 2013 11:15 AM

I bought Photoshop 7 years ago which was comptible with XP. I tried loading on Windows 8 and it is not supported.  What program is similar to Photshop 7 that is compatible with Windows 8?

It is not supported as it is way old, does not mean it will not work.  But getting it to work may be not worth the effort unless you like computer troubleshooting.

I would say you migrate to CS2 which has a free download for old PS users.

Photoshop CS6 (13) is the current version of Photoshop that is still sold by Adobe but without a monthly subscription:

Photoshop Elements 12 is the current version of Elements that might be sufficient depending on what you do in PS7, so you might download the PSE12 trial and see if it is enough capability:

There is a free program called GIMP that does some of what PS does:

Photoshop 7 should run fine on windows 8 unless you have a hard drive bigger than 1TB.

Do you get some kind of message in windows 8 saying photoshop 7 is not supported?

(i think it's probably that stupid smart screen or whatever microsoft calls it)

Check your hard drive size and tell us what size it is.

Here's photoshop 7 and ImageReady running on a windows 8.1 preview

As long as your hard drive is smaller than 1TB, then photoshop 7 actually runs much better than photoshop cs2 on windows 8

With a 1.5 TB hard drive you might as well look for another newer version of photoshop, because photoshop 7 won't work anyway

when your hard drive has more than 1TB of free space, because photoshop 7 won't read hard drives with free space of more than 1 TB.

That might possibly be why your not able to install the program.

If your needs are just simple edits, then perhaps photoshop elements 12 as ssprengel suggested will serve that purpose.

You can create a partition of less than 1T for PS7.

You can create a partition of any size for any hard drive.  Just google partion win8.  Just figure how big a partition you need for program and data. plus 50%.
