Drop Down Menus in Photoshop CS 6 Goes Blank In Mavericks

Hi

I'm having trouble with Photoshop CS6 in Mavericks. After a working a little while, all pop up/drop down menus goes blank. They still work, but I can't see what's on them. Even the Apple menu bar is afflicted by this, though only when Photoshop is in the front.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.  PS: I do use a cintiq on a 2012 Macbook Pro 15" with retina display.

So far we only have 2 reports of this, and we haven't seen it on any of our systems with MacOS 10.9 installed.

Our best guess is a third party system extension or plugin causing interference with menu drawing.

I am experiencing the same issues here. Not using any 3rd party plugins.

I'm experiencing weird (random) glitches while using the Polygon Lasso Tool. When these 'glitches' start to occur, the blanc menus start to show up.

I work on an 2012 iMac, 32 Gb Ram, Wacom Intuous Tablet..

    BTW, I'm using Photoshop CC.

We are also having this issue with our two brand new 27 inch iMacs (not Haswell but the previous model) in our photography studio. We're running recent installs of Photoshop CC and since the computers are only used for Photoshop, the only thing we installed on them was Photoshop, Bridge, and nothing else except the driver for our Wacom Intuos 4 tablets. The issue started happening today on both computers, right after installing Mavericks this morning. It never happened before.

So far, the issue happened once on each of two computers over the course of 6 hours of continuous work.

The issue is solved when quitting Photoshop and reopening it, however, when having many unsaved files open, it becomes almost impossible to save them as the menu and dialog boxes are all blank. So it inderectly leads to lost data.

Here's the system info from one of the computers:

Check all your system extensions / utilities -- something is interfereing with menu drawing, and it doesn't affect everyone, so it is probably something that you have installed on your system.

Start with all the system extensions and utilities that you have installed.

Many will be listed in the system preferences panel, or on the menu bar.  But only you know what you have installed.

And, as always, avoid anything that claims to be a system "cleaner" (they do more damage than good).

Our machines have nothing installed other than what's necessary: Photoshop CC, Bridge CC, Llightroom 5, latest Wacom Intuos 4 driver, MPEG Streamclip, Perian, Flash and Java. That's really it.

I'm the system administrator and I make sure that nothing other than what's absolutely necessary is installed on them, because I know that keeping a system clean makes troubleshooting problems like this much easier. There are no extensions, utilities and god forbid any "cleaner" applications, whatsoever installed. Since the machines are just a month old, it's easy to keep track of what's been installed.

A bit more detail on the problem: not only do menus go blank (white), but also strange artefacts appear. When using the crop tool, for example, a fairly large white square appears at the bottom right of the Crop cursor, and follows it around when dragging. Clicking and holding the mouse on a tool in the toolbar brings up a sub-menu filled with random bits such as brush thumbnails. In addition, when closing Photoshop, the "Do you want to save?" dialog is completely white too. So it's not just popup menus.

We have two more iMacs that have not (yet) exhibited the issue, but they are identical in both hardware and software to the two that have had the problem. I will keep an eye on them to see what happens.

The issue only happened twice, once on one iMac, and once on another, within an 8 hour period of constant heavy use of Photoshop.

I'm sure the issue is related to Mavericks, as it only started happening today, and we installed Mavericks this morning.

When this happens, what do you see in the "Console"?

Launch Utilities>Console.app, and click "All Messages" Then look for error messages towards the bottom - messages are time stamped and you can use this to filter out irrelevant messages.

That makes it sound like a video driver or system drawing issue.

But it could still be related to a driver or utility software.

You're connected to an SMB server that isn't working quite right.

And MacOS is having trouble with one of the windows in Photoshop - so that might be a symptom of the failure to draw, but doesn't tell us why the OS is having trouble with a window.

Yes the CGSLockWindow failure is interesting. What kinds of tasks are you doing in Photoshop before this happens?

I'm having the same problems as described above after installing Mavericks.  White boxes instead of menus.  I've tried basic troubleshooting, uninstalling, reinstalling, wiping prefrences clean, updating Photoshop.  No change in results.

I'm having problems when I use the polygonal lasso, sometimes transforming objects (I get a weird white square next to the boudning box) and also certain brushes simply stall photoshop.

I also run a wacom cintiq.  Could this be tablet related?

    Thanks,

    Michael

"I also run a wacom cintiq.  Could this be tablet related?"

My feeling says this is the case. When I disconnect the tablet and connect / work with a mouse the Lasso tool seems to work without problems.
Maybe Wacom driver is not ready for Mavericks...?

How can we further test this?

All right, it happened on our third iMac today, so on a total of three computers. Here's a detailed screen recording (view on 1080p to see everything) showing the menu bug, the cursor bug, and some other glitches. I also show the Applications folder and the System Preferences panel to show you what's installed on the system.

Here's what I was doing before it happened: I opened Photoshop at 9 am and started working on large, multi-layered, 2-3 GB PSB files, editing the contents of smart objects using various tools. I do this every day. The bug happened all of a sudden at 12:15 pm. I quit Photoshop and reopened it, it's all back to normal for now.

I have the latest Wacom driver installed, version 6.3.7-3, just in case someone's wondering.

Here are some Console messages from around that time (many many many of these repeat over pages, especially the first one, so I'm only pasting in everything that seems relevant once):

    25/10/2013 12:14:57.005 Adobe Photoshop CC[10910]: CGError CGSGetDisplaySystemState(uint64_t, CGSDisplaySystemState **): MIG error 0x10000003: (ipc/send) invalid destination port

We're also connected to an SMB share network, unfortunately it's an old network and it's always causing various file-related problems. Not sure if that's related to the Photoshop bug.

I am having the same issue. The menus go white and when I went to slide the opacity the spunge icon appeared instead of the percentage.  This has only been happening since upgrading to mavericks.

Using CS6 PS with Wacom tablet.  Restarting PS solves the issue short term.  I am not connected to any other servers.

    Thank you for this video.

When the problem occurs can you try the following two things:

    - Drag a panel out of a group & see if the dragged panel is a white surface or has the expected look

    - Right click on the document tab to get the popup menu that contains "Reveal in Finder". Does this menu show?

I also have this problem. To answer your questions...

    - Right click brings up the menu - but it is also white

    - dragging a panel out - it is a white box but the image i'm working on does show ok within it.

I have disabled all plugins etc, reinstalled photoshop cc and it still doesn't work.

I have the same issue with white menus. Recently upgraded to Mavericks. Happens after I've been working on just one image, so I have to guess where to press, to save it, and then restart PS. This is incredibly annoying and time consuming. Have you found a solution yet? I have Wacom tablet as well as many of you guys. I don't have any third party plugins in Photoshop, but I have third party installations on my macbook pro.

So far we do not have a reproducible test case. I see that you are using a Wacom tablet. Have to updated your Wacom driver to the latest version? (http://us.wacom.com/en/support/drivers)

I too have updated my Wacom drivers, and have found that there is no difference regarding this issue.

Unfortunately, the 'blank menus' are appearing so often, that I must restart photoshop (at first sight of the problem) 6 to 7 times DAILY.  I am now at the point where I am considering drastic alternatives, such as going back to Photoshop CS5 or even wiping my system and reinstalling the previous OS all together.  There is no doubt that this issue will cause serious professional problems (if applicable) for any who encounter it.

It would mean a great deal to me personally to have this issue resolved.

Please let me know what I can do to help.

It would be helpful if you can describe the steps (roughly) that you take from start of Photoshop until the problem occurs:

    - How many documents do you open and close?

    - Which tools and filters are you using?

    - Which Wacom model are you using?

    Thanks four your help

    Jesper

It happens to me when working with PSD files - I have one psd open and a number of of ther JPGs.

I'm creating album layouts - so only using basic functionality such as crop, copy/paste/, dodge/burn, layer masks, occasionally liquify. It's hard to know exactly when it happens - as you don't notice it until you go to use a new tool or menu...

I'm using Wacom Intuos 5 tablet.

As one of the other guys said, its making photoshop nearly unusable for me - so anything I can do to help you get to the bottom of it please let me know!

    Thanks

    Peter

    Jesper,

    - How many documents do you open and close?

This can vary, as the problem occurs with one file and also with several files open in Photoshop.  I am usually running Firefox and Preview with a few windows/tabs simultaneously.  Occasionally iTunes will also be running.

    - Which tools and filters are you using?

I use the Brush tool most often, occasionally the polygonal lasso, transform tool, the smudge tool and the eraser

    - Which Wacom model are you using?

      Wacom, Cintique 22

I believe that's Abwelder Werkzeug (Detutsche) or the 'Dodge tool' in English.

I also use this on a regular basis.

However, I might point out that no specific tool is setting off the problem consistently for me.

If anything, I notice it most with the transform tool because a white square will appear next to the bounding box.

I have reinstalled the wacom driver as suggested.  I can now access my wacom preferences under system prefs.  Also, my intuos 3 is finally showing up and working correctly, as well.

I will keep you posted on whether or not this fixes the blank menu bug.
