No caching

Oct 24, 2013 11:46 PM

We are about to launch a brand new website, with hundreds of pdf:s, pictures, and frames. When I change something on the site, I always have to manually empty Chrome's cache for it to show. It even caches whole pdf:s, so I get the wrong one if I didn't empty my cache before.

We have hundreds of clients using our site. I can't tell them all to start by emptying their cache before viewing our site. Is there a way to set this in Dreamweaver, that it should NOT allow any caching?

I hope you understand what I mean, I am new to the program and only a "user" (somebody else built the site, I only add and delete stuff).

There are many ways to prevent a page from being cached:

    • Set the expiry in the server
    • Set the expiry using PHP
    • Set the expiry using .htaccess
    • Use cache manifest file to control the cache
    • Use meta tag to control the cache

    ...etc

(This list is sort of in order of better to worse )

To force the fresh download of a file, you can append a unique query string to the URL, e.g.

    some-pdf-file.pdf?nocache=123456789

I use Date object to generate unique numbers.
