is it a good idea to give each event you take pics of its' own catalog? is there a maximum # of catalogs you can have

    In general, most people advise you to use a single catalog for all of your photos. There are exceptions, but for beginners, I would say go with one catalog.

    Yes, this is one of Lightroom's greatest strengths ... there are many ways to select just a portion of your photos.

     

    The primary method I would recommend is to assign keywords to your photos, and then when you want to see only the photos that have the keyword "Family" for example, you would point at the keyword "Family" in the Keyword List panel on the right and then click on the arrow to the right of the word Family.

     

    There are many other ways to select and filter certain photos in Lightroom.
