I am new to InDesign as have been using PageMaker for years.
I have just installed a Trial Version of CS 5.5 and am trying to open an InDesign document which was created by my friend. InDesign crashed when trying to open the document, it gave me the following error messages:
I have no idea what do these error messages mean. I have tried several times and the same messages came up.
And now, when I opened CS5.5, it gave me the error messages right away. The only differences of the errors are the WER numbers.
Any suggestions/comments are much appreciated.
You haven't really given us an error message, but most versions of Windows don't provide anything useful, anyway.
The files you list are all temporary files, possibly created by ID as it starts up. It's pretty hard to know why the file is failing from that, however.
First thing you need to do is empty the InDesign Recovery folder. It should be in C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\Adobe\InDesign\Version 7.5\<langauge>\caches\
That should allow you to start ID normally. Can you create a new file, save, and reopen it? If so, the problem is most likely the other file, and one possibility is a bad font. If not, ig may be program related, and a place to start would be with killing SING. See SING Removal
I empty the Recovery folder and was able to open ID normally. I was also able to create a new file and reopened it without any problems.
But when I tried to open another ID document, it gave me those error messages again. I have two different ID documents, both couldn't be opened.
Is there any way to find out what would be the problems? If it's a bad font, won't it give me a font error message?
I just want to give you more information. After I tried to open the other ID documents and received those error messages, I was not able to start ID normally. I have to go to empty the Recovery folder again before ID can start normally.
It happened continuously.
Another update. I just tried to open the other ID document again. Strange enough, it started the proces with Creating Preview, then the Open Document window appear but it stayed on for a while and nothing happened.
How did you receive the documents? If they were sent by email, were they zipped for protection?
I can send you an upload link to send the file to me and I can try here, but there's no guarantee I will fare any better. It sounds like the files may be damaged.
Yes, they were sent via email. One of them were zipped for protection while the other one wasn't.
Yes, please send me the upload link and I'll send you the files to see if you can open them. It's strange that both files would have been damaged.
Also will the problem be caused by being mine is a trial version?
When I tried to open the ID documents directly, the Trial Window (asking me if I want to continue with the Trial version) never did come up. That window only came up when I open ID normally without opening any documents.
The EDDM postcard opens fine here with missing fonts (the originals are probably Mac format True-type) when using File > Open...
It's a converted Pagemaker file, but I con't tell you much more.
The other zip file is password protected, so I can't open it.
Thank you for the files. I am sorry for the late response as I was away for a while.
When I tried to open the ID document the first time, ID gave an error saying "Stop working". Then I quit and tried to open it again, and it DID!
I was also able to print a PDF from it as well, as a test.
And I closed it and reopened it, no problem.
So did you make any changes before you sent me the ID file? Yes, I saw those missing fonts as well but couldn't understand why since I have all those fonts in my PC. Do I need to install them into ID?
Thank you very much for your kind assistance.
The file I sent you was a .idml file I exported from the file you sent. That's a way to sometimes clear out gunk causing problems, particualrly with files converted from other formats.
Most of the fonts are missing becasue the file originated on a Mac and used old Mac-format fonts which don't work in Windows. You'll have to use Find Font to substitute your Windows versions of some other similar font for each one.
Thank you, Peter.
I sent you another ID file earlier and it was password protected. Would you mind if I send it again to you without the password protected option to see if can open it?
OK, Something is really strange. I tried to open the ID document you sent me and CS5.5 stopped working. I was not able to open it.
I have also emptied the InDesign Recovery folder, but it didn't help.
I have tried to open the ID file you sent me earlier this afternoon and have no problem opening that one.
So I really don't know what's going on.
I really appreciate all of your help.
Have you tried to install the 7.5.3 update? Help > Updates....
And you do understand that the CS5.5 trial is a dead end, right, as far as installing ID? There is no more licensing available for CS5.5 or earlier.
Your choices now are a perpetual license for CS6, or a Creative Cloud subscription, which gets you both the latest version (and updates as long as you subscribe), and CS6 if you want/need it for collaboration.
Yes, We are going to purchase the CS6 within the next two weeks (we can't buy a later version since we need CS6 to convert our many PageMaker documents). Hopefully, once we purchase it, we won't experience these problems. And I am doing the updates now. I'll let you know if that makes any differences.
Again, thank you very much for all of your kind assistance. I really appreciate that.
Something is really strange.
Out of curiosity, I tried to convert my original PageMaker document myself with my ID 7.5.3 Trial (I couldn't do it myself in the past, that's why I sent it to one of my friends, who has ID to do it), and I was able to convert the PM file into ID file, with only two font errors. The whole ID file looks fine to me.
Another strange thing is that those two missing fonts are in my PC (I am using Windows 7 Pro, and I created the PM file using its XP Mode with PageMaker). When I highlighted the texts that have the msising fonts, ID did show the correct fonts in its Text Identifier box and those fonts also are in the Font Menu (under the Type tab) of my ID.
I don't know if that's because I have rebooted my system overnight or not (I didn't reboot after updated to 7.5.3 since it didn't ask me to).
It seems that my ID has the mind of its own, sometimes it wants to work properly, sometimes not.
Very strange indee, don't you think?
First, ID is far more sensitive to corrupt or badly made fonts than any other application I've ever seen, and second, it doesn't allow fuax bold or italic the way Pagemaker, Word and Quark do, so if a font was made bold or italic in Pagemaker by clcikign the button, and there really isn't a bold or italic variant installed, the font will be missing in ID.
What fonts are we dealing with?
No, Both of them are not in brackets. And I have just revised my PM file myself and I then went to my ID to convert it. It was converted successfully except with the same two font errors. Everything looks fine and I was also able to print pdfs from the ID file as well.
FYI, I created the original PM file myself (XP Mode in Windows 7 Pro). The reason I sent it to m friend (who have Mac) was because my ID wouldn't convert it.
Then this morning, after I made some revisions in my PM file, I decided to try to convert it myself with my CS5.5 Trial and was able to do so, except the two font errors. So basically, I am using my original PM file to convert into ID myself, and all the fonts I used in the PM file are also in my system (both Win 7 Pro and XP mode).
So I really don't know why ID kept saying I have two missing fonts when they were in my system, as well as in the Font drop-down menu (not in brackets).
