TextArea displaying XML

Now I know this is a simple one, but my reason for posting is seeking BEST practice for my issue. XML doesn't rate highly in level of experience so I would appreciate so more advanced input :) Simple scenario:

TextArea Component in Flex is populated with all sorts of hyphens and bullet points. I need to

(a) Save it ALL as XML

(b) Reload it from the XML file and have it render correctly

At the moment it reloads all the xml excluding paragraph breaks and not displaying special characters!
