There's plenty of info via Google but most PCs are 64 bit these days

Doesn't matter. The Photoshop installer will work that out.

Both 64 bit and 32 bit Photoshop will install on a 64 bit computer. Only 32 bit will install on a 32 bit machine.

64 bit should always be run unless you have specific 32 bit plugins which will not run on 64 bit Photoshop.

No need to re-install CS2 first. Just install CS5.

Enter your CS5 upgrade serial number then enter your CS2 serial number when prompted.

CS2 to CS5 is definitely a valid upgrade path. Countless people have upgraded that way successfully.

CS5 was the last version to which the "3 versions back" upgrade rule applied: i.e. CS2, CS3 and CS4 were all eligible for upgrade to CS5.

What matters is whether your CS2 and CS5 serial numbers are valid in Adobe's eyes.

Where did you get them from?

    I purchased CS2 on ebay.

    Hmm...

My first inclination is to suspect you've inadvertently purchased an invalid (pirated) CS2 serial number.

Unfortunately, it's a common phenomenon there.
