Upgrading from Freehand 9.0.1

Aug 7, 2006 5:44 PM

I am WAY behind the curve with system and software upgrades so please forgive me if this is ancient history, but ...

I'm now using OSX (Tiger) and wish to upgrade my version of Freehand from 9.0.1 to be with OSX. Is (was) there a way to do this or do I have to purchase the Adobe version of Freehand now?

I know that I can still run version 9.0.1 in Classic mode, but am hoping to minimize the number of new files created that way.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

There is no OSX update for FreeHand 9. Usually updates are made for current version.

Concluding from all the posts here there is problems with Mac compatibility of the latest version FHMX (11). All the Windows versions of FreeHand still work in WinXP. ;)

In fact there is no Adobe version since FHMX was released long before the merger and it may the last version of FreeHand. So if you purchase FHMX you'll get of course 2 point upgrade anyway.

You can upgrade from 9 to MX...here's the link on Adobe's site that explains it...

    Jukka,

I know there are at times negative comments about MX running on Tiger, BUT in defense of MX, I think it runs great on Tiger. There were a few bugs, but nothing that wasn't solved with some easy workaround. FreeHand runs better under Tiger than QuarkXPress for me. For example, XPress had trouble making PDF's (at least version 6) and would quit out when attempting to create a PDF. FreeHand very rarely quits out on me. I know others here have a lot of success with FreeHand running under Tiger too. Also, although some disagree, Adobe did announce there is a maintenance release this fall, so even if there are still some unresolved problems, the next update should resolve that.

If you should "upgrade" from FH 9 to MX, be sure to keep a copy of FH 9 to revert to. After spending this whole day just trying to make what usually took me 5 minutes before upgrading, I would rather say MX is downgrading. But to be able to work in OS Tiger you still need to "update" to MX.

Hopefully Adobe will talk to Apple and make the promised revision of MX to work in Leopard....

And also hopefully, they should talk to users instead of developers on how a long running success like Freehand should be upgraded instead of just tweaked with useless new ideas combined with numerous bugs!

It is actually very annoying, to say the least, when I after 20 years of daily use, suddenly can not make any designs in Freehand any longer. (Besides the fact I can not open my old files!) Especially after paying out a small fortune on a new Mac and programs...

I know but I'm still annoyed by the 'Better OS Debate'. I've worked equally with Mac and Win (some Unix too) and equally love/hate them both.

So please ignore, the comment was just for all the Mac Fundamentalists who do not know their way beyond double click. ;)

If the developers can not improve on the programs and think the users should adapt to their silly tweaks and numerous bugs, it is time for me to retire as a designer. I am only interested in improving my designs, not my computer skills....

This of course applies to every OS.
