Need Update???

Mar 10, 2009 5:51 AM

I've been using Dreamweaver MX 2004 on a 7 year old Powerbook running 10.3.9. Have gotten a new MacBook running 10.5.5. I moved my website files to the new laptop and exported and imported the settings but am unable to get Dreamweaver to function as it should. Frequently it won't upload a page - it quits unexpectedly (although it is becoming an expected event).

I am wondering if I need to upgrade Dreamweaver. I don't want to spend the money to do that if it isn't going to solve my problem.

Any help would be appreciated. ~Betty

Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 officially supported OSX 10.3. That may
be why it doesn't work as expected with the newer 10.5.5. DW has seen
many improvements since MX 2004 - not just features and interface
changes, but improvements in the actual generated code. You would do
    well to upgrade.

If that is the only function that doesn't work properly, just use an FTP program... I will "guess" the Mac world has freeware programs

Yes, it is a bit of a pain to have to switch from DW to some other program to transfer files... but that costs a lot less than an upgrade

Where I work, the IT department requires using only one "approved" program for file transfers... which they control via password and security settings... so I edit in DW and switch over to the FTP program for uploads

Part of the settings of a site definition are what is the path to the local
    site folder on THAT computer.

    is that setting correct?

    Yes.

Huh? You select a file in the Files panel, upload it, and it disappears
    from the Files panel?

    This is not making sense.

And confused, too, as are we all.

Sounds like it, but just to be sure, edit the site definition and copy and
paste the path in the Local root folder field into a reply here.

When you hover over the New site button in the Define Sites dialog box, it
gives you a choice of SITE and RDS

    pick SITE

You've created an RDS site which is a way to work "live" on the remote
server with no local site folder. Don't choose that- choose a regular site
that does have a local site folder.

    @bkist,

Just as what Murray has suggested that we are also confused here about what you are trying to achieve.

Go back to the fundamental question, are you sure that you have 'define the site' correctly at the first place? Is that a no, still?

Don't think so, Alan. Were it an FTP & RDS Server site, there would not be
    a PUT option....

This is troubling. Please try uninstalling DW and reinstalling it.

when you do the above, import an .ste from a different computer- the path
for the local site folder is the path on the OLD computer.

unless the hard drive name, your Username, and the place you want the local
site folders to be are exactly the same between the two computers, you have
to edit the imported site definitions to fix three things.

local info: location of local site folder
local info: location of default "images" folder, if used

site tab: location of this site's "homepage"

Also to be clear- the .ste file will only import the site definition.

It does NOT move the site's assets.

You would need to copy the "local site folder" for each site on the old
computer and move it to the new computer.

or if everything is uploaded, you could download all the remote site host.

    @bkist,

Before you proceed to uninstall Dw CS4 on your computer, be sure to DEACTIVATE Dw CS4. While you are making an attempt to deactivate, be sure to have your computer remain online and connected to Internet, because deactivation process need to contact Adobe server for that matter.

Once you perform uninstallation, before you re-install, you want to delete some Dw CS4 preference files in Library.

    Hope that helps.
