I tried the HelloFlash sample that comes with alchemy, and ran into the same problem. swfbridge.log contains:

Additionally, if I set LOGLEVEL=3, adl outputs a single line, "bridge error", sortly after launch (prior to the long pause), which ends up at the top of /tmp/adl.trace . /tmp/adl.trace contains as a whole:

Thank you for the assistance. I've switched back to flex sdk 3.2 in order to follow the instructions precisely, but I still experience the same problem. The sdk seems only to be used for the adl binary (I think?); I've tried adl from the 3.3 sdk, the 3.2 sdk, and am now using the latest air sdk, but all do the same thing.

I ran the bytecode for the swf through abcdump (after painstakingly figuring out how to build it) and, after grepping for the "bridge error" message, found it is generated when the bridge code recieves an IOError on connecting to a socket. If only the message output the error text, or said what port was being connected to! I'm not sure how to proceed debugging this without learning as3 machine code -- is there a way to get alchemy to make the generated application connect to fdb?

I found there was a recent update to the Adobe AIR runtime (which I installed the latest of) which strengthened the security -- could you verify that alchemy's .exe's are known to work in cygwin with the latest AIR runtime installed?

EDIT: FINALLY "resolved" this. I found the bridge source in the temporary $$.achacks.as file and modified it to show the error, which was "Error #2031: Socket Error. URL: localhost". I tried adding code to change the host to "127.0.0.1" if it was "localhost" and magically that fixed it. For some reason it wasn't resolving "localhost" properly, I guess. "ping localhost" on my computer gives a response from "::1" which is perhaps not an ip address that Adobe understands -- however "nslookup localhost" gives "127.0.0.1" .

Maybe this is something with Vista, or ipv6, or who knows what. I'm satisfied with trying to automate the process of injecting if (host == "localhost") host = "127.0.0.1" into $$.achacks.as .
