How stable is LR2 for you?

Aug 14, 2008 10:09 AM

I've been a regular user of LR1. I am attracted to some of the new features in LR2 and have already purchased (but not installed) the upgrade.

I was burned a bit with the LR 1.4 upgrade and I have read a fair amount about various problems in LR2. I do not like it when software I'm using crashes and causes me to lose work. I am trying to decide whether to install LR2 now or wait until 2.1 comes out from Adobe.

So, for all you LR2 users, can you tell me which of the following is most true for you:

1) LR 2 is at least as stable as LR 1 and I'm happy with it.

2) LR 2 has some stability issues that I hope Adobe fixes, but it's still worth upgrading as I haven't lost any significant work.

3) LR 2 has worse stability issues than LR 1 and I wish I had waited until 2.1 comes out.

FYI. I have a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel processor so hopefully I won't be bit by performance issues in LR 2.

Every bodies mileage is going to be different. Not everybody has had problems. Instead of inflaming the ongoing problems that exist, why don't you go download the trial and make your own subjective decision instead. Come on back when you have had a chance to do your own objective analysis and ask important questions related to the actual use of the product.

I've had exactly zero crashes with any version Lightroom except for Beta 4 (before 1.0 release).

    "Burned" with Lightroom 1.4?

Come on, Adobe made a mistake here, but were able to provide a fix quite soon (1.4.1).

On the whole, LR always was and LR2 also is, one of the most stable and bug free Raw Converter releases of the last years.

Despite of the reported performance issues, LR2 is much better and more stable than any of the recently released RC: DxO 5, Capture One 4, and LightZone 3 (which is the best of the latter three). DxO 5 and Capture One 4 both crashed within 10 Minutes of trial on my machine, LightZone had occasional crashes. DxO 5 did not even carried over all features of the previous version, has still the worst image browser I have seen to date, only excels due to its good handling of image noise. All of these programs had undergone several bugfix releases already, and now mostly work, but for DxO it took 6 months!

LR never crashed at least. I'm not an uncritical promoter of Adobe, but honestly and relatively speaking, Adobe did the best new product releases so far.

That does not mean, that there aren't serious problems with LR 2, but the ones of the competitors, were certainly much worse.

    Kind regards

    Thomas

I'm finding LR2 to be 2), but that's after some troubleshooting for what seemed to be 3). I don't mean system troubleshooting either, I mean LR2 troubleshooting. I'm not going to repeat myself here, but my other posts document my experiences in more detail.

For most of the stuff that LR1 was able to do, LR2 seems to do it almost as well. For the new localized editing tools it's love/hate. The tools are fantastic, but on my system they sometimes make LR2 lockup until force quit. The only time LR becomes completely unresponsive is when I'm using the brush/gradient and it seems like mostly it's the gradient or sometimes it's brush use after a gradient.

I haven't lost any data or had any noticeable corruption so I'm sticking with it, but I've lost a fair amount of time. For professional use I would stick with LR1 for the time being.

I've had several crash in LR2 but nothing that lost data. LR1.x was solid as a rock. Other than that I love LR2 and it has truly improved my workflow speed over 1.x. I love the second monitor support, I've been able to hack together some keyboard shortcuts for the lib+dev modules, the lib module now looks like the dev module when viewing images, and the grad filter is amazing (I use it pull back the sky).

**update: all my issues are in the develop module, the library module is totally stable.

No stability issues for me since v1.0 all the way through to 2.0.
