I'm from Alaska, and we only get one match on TV per match day, but from what I have seen, I don't think any team still playing can match up against AC Milan. They are so good on the ball. They beat Manchester Utd. 2-0 on aggregate without Shevchenko. Chelsea are impressive when they "show up", Bayern are tough, Liverpool has injuries and didn't quite measure up before, and despite the other results from the first knockout round, I think AC Milan will take it all.

It's an elimination series though, most teams can have a day where they can beat the other team, so it doesn't really solve who's Europes best.

They play home and away, and I think Europes best can be defined as the best on game days, consistent enough to see it through. I love seeing "weaker" teams with more heart step up and close down the teams with superstars.

I coached my son's team (when he was age 10-16), and over our first three seasons we were 0-9 vs. the one team we couldn't beat, and 45-3-1 vs. all the rest. With our goal set to win Alaska's State Cup, we knew who we had to beat. We got to the finals, and we beat them 2-1. Maybe they were better than we were, but we had a thrilling win, and we went on to win State Cup 3 of the next 5 years. That's the thrill of sports for me, that you have to be ready on game day, and the team that wants it more can beat the "better" team.

you mean futball? :)

I never got into soccer when i was growing up (real football and baseball - later on - wrestling). but i have to admit it's cool to watch when the little kids are playing. the girls have been doing it for a few years now. i've tried watching pro soccer, but they're SO good and often so low scoring, it's yet to keep my attention for more than a quarter or so at a time.

rugby though i can watch for hours! i wish there was more of it on over here.

I know we have a pro soccer league in the US, but do we have a pro international team too?

Dave--American football (I'm a Jets fan) is American football, and real football is what the rest of the world (and the USA at last) play with a round ball for 90 minutes with one halftime and no other breaks and only 3 subs per game! Our USA Mens National Team lost 2-1 at Mexico Sunday in a World Cup qualifier, and in 2 hours we host Guatemala in another qualifyer. Mental recovery from the Mexico defeat needs to be complete, because it's game day, and only the score will decide which team is "best". The USA should be able to qualify for Germany '06, but a win today would help.

The Champions League is a European league for the cream of each country's top club teams. The winner is the European club champion. A good analogy would be to imagine that most countries in North, Central and South America were very competitive in American Football, and each year our USA's top 3 or 4 teams would qualify to compete the following year in the America's Cup for American Football, against 28 other very strong teams from the Americas. Did I lose you? Dang. I should have realized it would be impossible to imagine Paraguay with 330lbs offensive linemen. But that's the gist of the Champions League in Europe. Italy's top club teams vs. those from Germany/England/France/Turkey/Spain/Ukraine/Portugal/Netherlands/ and not one of them has a team with a player weighing 330lbs!!

ESPN2 at 8pm eastern. Keep an eye on a friend of mine for the USA, #25 Pablo Mastroeni. He came up here to visit and said when his soccer career is over, he wants to move to Alaska and take up dogsled racing. He is a tough defensive midfielder.

Yes. It's a vast soccer/football conspiracy! Actually, it does surprise me how people love to dis soccer if they don't like it or don't understand it. I'm not into auto racing, but it's cool if people enjoy it. Yesterday's USA over Guatemala (2-0) was pretty exciting, especially the 2nd half. "Only" two goals, but there were about 6-7 other very exciting scoring chances, including a goal-mouth incident in the 68th minute that had 5 people in my house screaming for 25 seconds, about 45 seconds before the U.S. finally broke through for the 2nd goal. We like it!

I'll be at Anfield on Tuesday night. Lower Centenary Stand, Row 20, opposite the Players' entrance - I'll wave to the TV cameras, you can't miss me, I'll have my red and white scarf on.

BTW, This makes interesting reading, especially for the Geordie boys. And look who are 23rd. That'll teach 'em to throw a game in Turkey.

Very clever john, diverting a soccer/football thread to March Madness, but I like good college hoops, so:

It was a great weekend, especially the elite 8 games. I see Illinois crashing and burning now. I missed the North Carolina game, but I thought Michigan State looked strong and I like their coach's attitude. All that said, I have to pull for Louisville! They have so much heart, and I think they have the guys to get it done. Now, (surprise) on the women's side, I like Baylor and Michigan State. Tennessee is the weakest of the four, and LSU looks to me to be close to the level of Baylor. I predict....Baylor wins it all in women's hoops, and AC Milan captures the Champions League in Europe.

Hello from Alaska. Liverpool is my favorite team!! But I'm afraid there will be too many red and white scarves on fans waving to the cameras for me to pick you out. I wish Liverpool seemed stronger and healthier right now. I just saw the 2-0 derby win (we get them on delay in the USA), and they had to use all three subs before the half!

Can't go to Istanbul, but we are planning to take the whole family to Germany for the World Cup. US football fans may be small in percentage, but we love the game. How are the injuries in Anfield?

Can I buy you a beer in Germany in 15 months?

Far too many. Djibril Cisse, Xabi Alonso, Josemi, Dietmar Hamann, Chris Kirkland, Djimi Traore for starters. Plus Milan Baros, the fool, got himself suspended. Antony Le Tallec could well be playing against Juve on Tuesday as 'Nando Morientes is prevented from playing as he played for Real Madrdid earlier in the saeson.

Well, Everton scored towards the end to make it 2-1. Hope I haven't spoiled the delayed end.

John, I just read the news about the huge win over Bolton. Now the Blues can hear the footsteps, and Europe next year is that much closer! By the way, I'm bringing my "SWMBO" to Germany next year, along with our kids (21,18,15,11), who are all footballers. My wife has some Welsh ancestors. She wants to know what "lechyd da!" means?

Thanks for the links you showed earlier. What is the history of YNWA at Anfield? How/when did it arise? I love the game, but I know next to nothing about the lore of England's clubs. I've been checking out the Liverpool FC website, which is quite good! It will be a very emotional time Tuesday night during the moment of silence for Juve and Liverpool for the 39.

Not UEFA or Liverpool, but did anyone see the punch up between Dyer and Bowyer? Newcastle ended up with 8 men on the pitch, one sending off for a deliberate handball, then these two apparently started fighting - I didn't see it.

I'm in the U.S. and we get one EPL game per week on TV (the teli), and it usually airs 4 days after the game is played.

My wife and I went to see a program at a movie theater last night called "The Brits and their Teli". It was the highlights of the best tv (teli) commercials/advertisments from England. Quite outrageous stuff compared to what is allowed to air on U.S. TV. The ads for Trojans (condoms) were so funny, with couples doing gymnastics to athletically end up copulating! That would never get on U.S. TV. I guess you Brits got rid of the Puritans, but they ended up here in America.

Taylor, the third player to be red carded should have got an oscar! He handled to save the ball going in the net and then did the full dying duck, clutching his side as if he'd be shot! The BBC showed it in slow-motion - very graceful!
