    Fish!

This one's Rufus because he's flamboyant and shiny:

Haven't got a name for this one yet- any ideas?

This one's Duffer. He's got a very sweet little face:

I haven't managed to get a good shot of Arthur (the black moor with the googly eyes) because my camera is struggling to focus on him, will try again in the daylight.

Since fish have such a poor short-term memory it doesn't matter he won't come when you call anyway!

    Not so!

    >IT IS time for the scales to fall from our eyes: scientists have claimed not only that goldfish have a memory span of up to three months, but that they can also tell the time.

    >The fish, previously believed to have a memory of just a few seconds, can distinguish between different times of day and can also be taught to follow a routine, according to research.

    >Scientists at Plymouth University have successfully trained the fish to collect food at particular times of day, showing the popular notion of the three-second memory to be very fishy indeed.

    Thanks :)

No more fish yet (my tank could probably take at least two more) as I have a bit of new tank syndrome. Basically, the fish are pooping more than the small amount of bacteria that's built up so far in the filter can manage to get rid of. It's a very common problem apparently and the local shop who've set me up with all of this are being really great and helping me sort it out. I need to add the stuff that gets rid of the ammonia and change some of the water today and tomorrow, then take another sample back to the shop on Thursday. The people in the shop did say that the water quality would deteriorate once I introduced fish, but I followed all instructions to the letter so I'm a bit gutted that it's happened to my tank!

I did think about ordering a tank online but I'm glad I didn't as I've been so pleased with the service I've had from this local shop. I even phoned them on Saturday for some advice and they talked me through what I needed to do.

    Hey Brightside,
that's exactly what happened to my tank, but I wasn't as quick as you to get it fixed. I lost a number of fish due to "new tank syndrome". :( A guy I work with calls them "donor fish".

Keep up the good work with the water changes/bacteria building/pH balancing. :)

sometimes it helps if you get some gravel from an established tank to help seed your tank with the right bacteria. i've had good luck with that method for both tropical and marine fish tanks.

    > some cat juggling woulda got you five. remember that next time!

I'll see if I can get Gladwyn interested. :D ;)

(If I had TWO cats that were as laid-back as Erasmus, it might almost be possible!)

Good news- no ammonia in the fish tank at all, and nitrite levels haven't gone up. I've got yet more chemicals to add and have to keep up with the water changes, but the fish shop bloke says if all goes well I can try adding some more fish on Saturday. Fingers crossed!

I got a chuckle today, watching Bubbie hunt around for a new "favorite place". His favorite places to sleep change from week to week, and it must be time to shop for a new one again. He looked like a feline Goldilocks "No, that's too hard," "No, that's too drafty," "No, that's too soft," etc. Looks like he's settled temporarily for hanging out with an elbow on his scratching post but that's just a thinking spot, not a sleeping spot, so the search isn't over yet.

I guess if all you had to do all day was eat, sleep, fill up a litter box and scratch yourself, you'd be looking for some kind of regular routine too. Must be a rough life. ;-)
