What challenges do you face?

Hi All,

 

As I read through the postings here regarding document management, packaging up files to move them around, user rights problems etc, I wonder if the stuff the company I work for creates might be able to help with some of these challenges...

 

I work for a company that has a pretty cool system integrating Indesign and Incopy (among other tools) at the core of an architecture for managing assests for print and web publishing. Currently it has been pretty tailored to the Newspaper Industry which is pretty demanding regarding asset management, workflows, audit trails etc...

 

We are in the process of opening that technology up in a SaaS offering to enable alternate markets to use what we have easily as well. I would really love to hear from this group and incorporate ideas and suggestions to enhance our technology to ensure it has the most value to the community.

    Hello Tony,

     

    I am a Mac-based magazine designer.  The editors are PC.  Will InCopy work cross-platform? 

     

    I have never used InCopy, so have all the questions, such as will fonts work on either platform?

    Hi Peter,

     

    Yes, Incopy docs are cross platform. Stick to opentype fonts, or use the pc

    postscript fonts on your mac.

    Hi Tony

     

    We're a community newspaper publisher. We're Mac based and currently using CS2 for ad and page layout and NewsEdit for editorial staff. We want to upgrade to CS4 but NewsEdit is not compatable. (NewsEdit is not longer being made, they've come out with a brand new program and to purchase that, would cost mega bucks.)

     

    We're looking at InCopy, but from what I can tell, it's mainly designed for companys that are layout driven (that is, writers write to fit the space). Being a newspaper that won't work for us.

    Hi Barb,

     

    Upgrading old systems can certainly be a challenge!! I totally understand

    the comments you make regarding the layout driven aspects of Incopy/Indesign

    publishing environments... I do believe there can be advantages when used

    the right way with the right technology facilitating the workflow... can you

    share your thoughts / experiences?

     

    The company mentioned is Digital Technology International ( www.dtint.com ).

    They offer a good system that is flexible and designed for newspaper content

    publishing. There are also some pretty interesting hosted system options

    offered you might want to take a look at that can help to mitigate

    upgrade/system purchase pain points.

     

    If you let me know the area of the country you are in I could point you to

    the right sales representative if you like.

    Tony,

     

    Is InCopy a stand-alone program?  Does each editor and the designer need to have both InDesign and inCopy?  And where does the working InDesign file reside while it in process?  On the web somewhere, or on the designer's Mac?

    Hi Peter,

     

    I no longer work for the company I mentioned but I am still a big DTI and

    adobe fan / evangelist and happy to try and answer your questions or put you

    in contact with the right people when the time is right.

     

    In a hosted environment you don't really have to worry about the file system

    , and there is some pretty interesting fault tolerance stuff available these

    days to make cloud-based apps reliable for publishing.
