IE8 + Flash 10.0.32.18: 2 User Accounts but Flash only plays in one

This problem is actually not browser unique, as I can't get flash to work with IE8, Firefox, or Chrome in one account.

I've been trying to sort this problem out for awhile, but can't seem to crack it.  Windows XP (home) sp3, Eset NOD32 AV, Comodo Firewall, WinPatrol, etc.

I thought there was a problem with the installation of the Flash player, so downloaded the uninstall utility, ran it, rebooted, checked the registry and deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Code Store Database\DistributionUnits\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} folder, (according to instructions here ), installed the latest version of Adobe Flash from the downloaded standalone installation files.  Installation flash video indicated a successful installation.  Went to C:Windows/system32/macromedia/Flash/ and updated the .exe file to the latest available...

The site I am trying to view flash content on is here (http://kadampafestivals.org/diaries/2009/summer/day-1-a-meaningful-holiday)

I have two user accounts on this system, both currently have administrative rights. One is a bit sleeker, as I use it only for admin tasks.  On it the flash content will play.  On the other account, no amount of fiddling with security settings, active x, java settings, and so forth seems to enable the flash content to play.  When I navigate to the site, I get a blank space on the page where the flash content should play, or if I choose play videos a pop up white screen with no content.  If I right click on the window, the adobe flash menu appears, but settings are not active or accessible, and don't seem to work as they normally would.

I've read through all the installation notes about Flash on the Adobe site, have attempted various lower security settings in the browser, no luck...tryed resetting IE8 to default settings, reinstalled Flash.  The System is scanning free of any malware with Eset, Mbam, SAS, Defender.

I've tried disabling the comodo firewall and using only Windows firewall, no effect.

If anyone out there can indicate a direction that would help me to sort this out I'd sure appreciate the input...Many thanks in advance.

(I'd be happy to attach a log file of the installation if anyone knows how to decipher it...seems like the C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\nsn83E.tmp\NSISArray.dll file was skipped a lot) - but then Flash works fine in the other user account....

I installed the latest updates for Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader and Abobe Shockwave Player to two of three of my Windows XP computers with IE8. I had all kinds of issues with Flash not running certain content on the two upgraded computers. I used the third computer to troubleshoot what could be wrong since it is mainly for testing and has minimal applications installed but has the same OS, service packs and patches, ect... but had been turned off for a few weeks and not updated yet.

I unistalled the Adobe Flash Player and the Adobe Shockwave Player completely off the system. There was no Adobe Reader installed. Installing just the Adobe Flash Player 10,0,32,18 I did not experience any problems. I went on one of the upgraded computers and removed all Adobe products. I then reinstalled each product, testing functionality after each install. It was the Adobe Shockwave Player version 11.5.1.601 that broke the Flash content. As soon as I uninstalled the Shockwave Player the Flash content the Flash content started working againg, everything seemed to work fine, or so I thought until I tried another user account. The Shockwave Player object was still in the Downloaded Program Files directory. Once I removed the object and reinstalled Adobe Flash with that user account everything worked as expected. It actually took installing Flash Player in both users accounts for an unknown reason. I then tried a third user account on that same computer. The Flash content did not run. I made the user an administrator, eventually the Flash content ran but when I took away the administrators priveleges the Flash content would not play. So I gave the account back administrators priveleges and reinstalled Abobe Flash Player on the third user account. I took away the users administrative priveleges and retested, it worked. So do the Adobe FLash Player settings need updated with administrators priveleges in the HKEY\Current User hive? It seems that way to me.

Here is the link to the web page I used for testing, http://www.hasbro.com/monkeybartv/default.cfm?page=Entertainment/OnlineGames/ColoringBook&brandFilte... it is the "Choose a Brand" Macrmedia Flash links that the issues were created with Shockwave Player installed and that did not work for Adobe Flash Player until each user account installed Flash Player first.

I have told everyone I was going to this forum to flame Adobe. I have been really unhappy about the issues created trying to patch the vulnerabilities identified in APSA09-03. I understand the web page developers coding is more likely to be at fault as well as Microsoft and their Active Template Library (ATL) issues, &&, that typo's do happen. I just feel Adobe is going to take some heat the following weeks over this.

BTW I have invested six hours in this today and still have the other upgraded computer to repair. To whom should I bill the work to?

Dear Mad at Adobe,

Thanks for the info, but my situation seems to be different.  I have both Shockwave components, the Flash 10.0.32.18 and the active X 11.5.1 installed on both user accounts (not sure how you would do otherwise),and yet flash content is only playing in one account. I have run the SubInACl, have uninstalled/reinstalled in various scenarios, with Comodo Firewall off, or on.  The account used for installation actually doesn't play flash, while another  also admin enabled account plays flawlessly.

You may be right that there's some kind of registry key at fault, but it looks like you deleted all the registry entries for Shockwave. I have no problems running Flash with Shockwave installed, on one of my accounts.  The other doesn't run Flash, even with shockwave uninstalled...

Yeah, I went through each user profile and completely removed Shockwave Player and left it off on all four Windows XP computers. No more problems with Flash running on any of them. I really don't have a need for Shockwave and can live without it until the bugs are worked out. I noticed not all user profiles has the Current User settings for Shockwave, only users that actually played a file that needed Shockwave Player to run. I had one profile that had a screen saver that got an error message when I used the work around where I renamed the authplay.dll for Adobe Reader to .old. Maybe you have something on the user profile that won't play Flash running that isn't configured to run on the good profile. Just a thought.

I really think the key to the issues with Flash Player is having Shockwave Player installed as well. Since my last two posts I tried a second user account on my test XP computer but since it still had the Shockwave Player 11.5.1.600 object I had issues with Flash not running on the specific web site mentioned before. So I went to my other patched XP computer that still needed repaired and uninstalled Flsah Player and made sure that the Shockwave Player and any Shockwave Player object was removed, rebooted then renamed a second user profile that I was going to use to test with. I then reinstalled the latest and greatest version of Flash Player, logged off and tried with the second, non-administrator test account that created a new local profile. No problems. My conclusion, all of the problems I experienced this weekend was from having both Shockwave Player and the latest Flash Player installed. I am still unhappy about spending what would be considered a full work day troubleshooting this issue.

Found the last piece of the puzzle, it was a registry key in the HKEY Current User. Once I deleted it for Shockwave Player my issues went away where the Flash would only run for one user unless it was reinstalled on every user. Uninstall Shockwave Player, its object and delete the following key from every HKEY Current User and Flash will work again. Look at all of the settings for the Current User:

I have simular issue.  I have a computer that started to crash IE with a flash 10c.ocx error right after the IE8 Update. so natrually it seemed logical to download firefox.  same issue.  download Safari. same issue.  So i ran Spybot.  it wont run says " the program has changed and it does not change itself and to scan for a virus immediately"  that was the message.  so i figured format was in store.

so i upgraded my hard drive. physically put in larger drive. installed XP from XP Cd. (not factory restore disc but xp retail box) it was xp serivce pack 1. first thing i did went to flash downloaded new flash. opened a flash page.  guess what explorer crashed with a flash 10c.ocx error .  i downloaded spybot same error program wont run to install.

So i got my vista disc. installed vista with a retail box.  SAME THING. no data no updates just goto my desktop first thign i did was open explorer download flash then when to http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html (the adobe flash test version page.  it crashed with 10c.ocx error.

SOOOO.. i got out my thumb drive. booted teh same computer to Ubuntu from the thumb. when to firefox installed flash when to link above guess what it did??? crashed.

this issue is not Browser driven, nor is it XP or VIsta driven.  it seems to be a bad release of flash.... HOWEVER, i have 3 other computer in the same house .... xp on two and they have the 10.0.32.18 and it works fine with that link above. the third computer is windows 7.  forwhatever reason it wont download and install the 10.0.32.18  i think its on 10.0.22?\.x?  but regardless it runs that link fine. NOW i woder if it is this COMPUTER.  is it possible to be a physical issue?

i have swaped out the video card no effect.

i have swapped out the memory .. no effect.

i have also tried all the windows up dates under xp and under vista (respectively) that didnt work in either case.  other then that it passes all hardware test and stress tests. just wont run spybot or the flash ocx plug in (flash test link above google street view cruical memory system scanner, etc)

Anyone else have this issue. any idea how to fix this?

Vector,

I think yours is a different problem as well...

I haven't had my system crash, and the Flash player installs "successfully",  it just won't play content on one account.

It sounds like you may have a malware issue on your system...I'd recommend you scan it with MBAM, or follow these protocols and then try to reinstall your Flash player...

Well now ok. so when you goto a flash site. what happens? does it report that you dont have flash and you need to update? or does it give you a pop up message reporting an error and close the browser window?  i dont understand what actually happens when you goto your desired flash componate.  also does flash play AT ALL? like when it installs it gives you a confermation flash movie.  some times have flash menus.  for me it installs just fine. the flash movie comes up to say it installed. but its the one componate flash10c.ocx that will close the browser.

i dont think its maleware. it can't be.  in short i've put a new hard drive in .. fresh from the box installed xp. just given myself network drivers, and then installed flash then visit the flash test site. and it will present that issue. basicly right out of the box of XP and Vista i've tried both.

i have a suspision its a software issue b/t IE and Flash.  although it does it with ie6 that comes from xp.

The object on the web page did not even show, just a blank area as if nothing was there. That was the case for example on myspace I had links for Dilbert cartoon strip and for Linkin Park media and it was as if the content no longer was there. On the web page link for the littlest pet shop coloring pages the ribbon was there for alll of the Flash links but I think it said unable to detect, the Flash was just a grey empty box for each box that had a Flash link.

Just to update the status here, I am continuing to work on this issue, along with some helpful guidance from another forum, which discussion you might be interested to follow here: http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=41587&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I tried uninstalling Shockwave Player 11.5.1.601 and that had no effect on the behavior of my Flash Player 10.0.32.18.  The Flash plays the installation files from Adobe but won't play flash movie content from the linked site on one user account, and will on another.  Both running with admin priviledges.

If I manage to resolve this I'll post the solution back here, but for the meantime if you're interested please use the link above to follow the thread.

Thanks for the responses and interest...

Another update, FWIW:

I have Flash 10.0.32.18 installed, and all Shockwave uninstalled, including a few orphaned registry keys that ccleaner pointed out to me.

I've run disk cleanup, defragged the hard drive, ran sfc /scannow, checked for malware, windows update, uninstalled IE8 & IE7, purged the temp files, reinstalled IE7, updated, reinstalled IE8.  Run SubInACL again in an attempt to fix the permissions on my system.  No luck.

I have two user accounts that run flash flawlessly.  On a third account, flash will play in the main browser window, but will not play in links or pop-ups.

I have referenced articles about permissions for user accounts here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/624/624850b5.html and here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19148.html , but still haven't managed to correct the permissions issue on the third user account.  (But I haven't completely gone through the list of entries in the second link above.)

If anyone out there knows what registry keys permit IE to launch linked flash content, or pop ups, I'd love to hear from you.

This is not an issue with the pop up settings in IE.  I have confirmed that all user accounts have exactly the same level of security, privacy, etc, and flash content in one user account will only play in the main window.  The site I am using to test this is here:  http://kadampafestivals.org/diaries/2009/summer/

why dont you try to back up your data and run system restore. your issue seems diffrent from mine.  however when i ran system restore the problem didnt go away.  i think this is a very important part of your diag.  will your issue go away with system restore.  my guess is yes because your other accounts work just fine.  for me when i create a new user they have the same issue even on a new account.

Vector,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm afraid this problem predates any of the restore points on my system.  I have used system restore to correct some of the attempted registry repairs I've made, and the flash situation stays the same...

Cleaning my system thoroughly has no effect on this issue, but some research on the Adobe site indicates the problem is related to locked registry permissions that prevent updates from being registered correctly. The result of this is a failed or incomplete installation of the update. (I have two user accounts that run flash flawlessly. On a third account, flash will play in the main browser window, but will not run in links or pop-ups.  This last improvement after removing an old flash entry from the registry.)

See articles here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/624/624850b5.html,
here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19148.html,
and a proposed solution here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/64211#64211

An explanation of the permission locking contols in older Flash installers is here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/116/4da116d3.html

I haven't worked through the entire solution yet, and SubInACL hasn't seemed to work for me even after a second attempt, but I'll reply when I get some results to report...

OK, I have finally resolved this issue, hopefully for good.

I've been through the gamut of solutions, with various stages of success & failure, from having flash work on some user accounts, to running a subInACL fix for all registry permissions that caused me to get the 'failed to register' error on installation, and having no flash installed with no user accounts working.

Now Flash is working in all scenarios, on all three user accounts, knock on wood!

I'm convinced that what finally did it was a complete uninstallation of Flash, not only using the latest uninstall from Adobe, but manually going through the Docs & Settings\Applications files and removing the Flash directory from all Adobe & Macromedia directories, in all user accounts.  Then rebooting, then installing from the web. (I ran the install with only Windows firewall active.)

See these instructions, especially the ones from November 26th, at this site:  http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=945195&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&sid=458f9256c09288e8...

For the sake of clarity, I copy them here (with updated links): (Note: steps 12 & 13 are essential).

More thorough instructions on uninstalling and reinstalling Flash (with thanks to LIMPET235 for providing the information):
