Are Adobe, Epson, & Apple all in step with Snow Leopard?

In light of the Lightroom printing debacle when Leopard came on the scene, it would be really interesting to hear from others once they have experience of printing out of Lr onto Epson Stylus Photo printers under the new Snow Leopard OS; due out I believe on Friday.
The following FAQ relates to the Creative Suite, but should also apply to Lightroom, etc http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/files/Adobe-SnowLeopard_FAQ.pdf
As for printer drivers being up to date, well, that's question for Epson, Canon et al.
Thanks for that link. To be fair - as far as I recall - the "Leopard" printing problem did not manifest itself with Creative Suite. In fact it was at one stage the only solution: export to CS3 and print from there.
Hence a genuine interest in hearing from users once they have experience of printing via the new OS. Hopefully, the Lightroom fix that Adobe introduced in 1.3 (?) will work as well with Snow Leopard.
As it turned out, many users did experience printing issues with CS4, which
uses the same newer print mechanism recommended by Apple, compared to CS3,
which used the older (now deprecated) print mechanism. Most of these were
eventually addressed by updated printer drivers.

I've been running Snow Leopard for a while now and have found very few issues... Lightroom runs just fine and I have not noticed any difference to my printing using my Epson R2400... my profiles works fine and colour between systems are consistent.
What I will say about Snow Leopard is... it makes my Mac feel like it has a rocket up its backside... Lightroom is so much faster in all operations (importing/exporting/adjustments) and after a hard session in LR, my Mac still works fairly smoothly, unlike with Leopard when it would bring the Mac to a snails pace crawl!!!

Excellent news. Thanks
Stew,
Very encouraging.. Are you using Photoshop? If so, CS3 or CS4? If CS3 any issues, especially in light of Adobe saying it won't officially support CS3 on Snow Leopard?

I use all the CS4 apps including photoshop... again, no problems and printing direct from photoshop also works fine!!!
Further to the epson drivers, my smaller printer R220 worked perfectly upon upgrading to snow leopard, but my R2400 required the driver being reinstalled (current version on epson website - April 2009)... after this all was ok and previous presets were still available!
According to the Epson web site very few (if any) printer drivers have been updated for Snow Leopard. They advise installing Rosetta for the time being.
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportSnowLeopard.jsp
The Rosetta install is a few MBs at most. So far as I can tell the Epson 3800 is working fine.
I installed Snow Leopard this afternoon, and still have not been able to print to my Epson Photo R1800 or to my old Epson Stylus Color 740. I installed Rosetta soon after installing Snow Leopard, and went to the Epson website to download a driver right after finding that I could not print out of LR. So far, however, I haven't found the magic combination - any print command goes out into cyber space. I had similar problems when I installed Leopard a year ago and eventually managed to load in all of the correct drivers, so I'm sure I will stumble upon a solution. Scheesch!
My Hewlett Packard all-in-one works just fine, but that's not my photo printer!

You might get more help by following the threads at Apple's Snow Leopard forum or even posting your own questions http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1344
I am just hoping that Epson takes this opportunity to get with the program and provide properly written drivers for the Stylus Pro printers so that B&W prints come out properly.
In the meantime, I am going to wait before upgrading to Snow Leopard. At least on my studio machine.
Actually, I usually wait for the .1 update to be released before upgrading the OS in a major step (ie, 10.5.x to 10.6).
And for the record, I have never been able to get CS4 or LR2 to print properly in B&W using PS manages color. I have to switch to CS3 for printing.
I am curious to hear whether the Rosetta option referred to by Epson (whatever it does) actually makes the Stylus Pro printers work properly.

That bug was supposed to be fixed in version 6.57, which can be obtained from the Epson UK site. For some reason Epson USA didn't post it.
Oh dear. Seems I may have spoken too soon. At least as far as the Stylus Photo R800 goes. Installed yesterday, and have since been trying to find the magic formula. The big difference between now and then (pre-Lr 1.4) is that it not only does not print photo correctly from Lightroom - it doesn't print photos correctly from anything, including Photoshop which was the back stop previously. Prints are way too dark and over-saturated, and consistently so from each programme. So this is obviously not a subject just for the Lr forum. That said, if anyone finds success with their R800 it would be great to hear how.
FWIW, in response to the OPs inquiry-
I have updated from 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro to 10.6. I have an Epson R2880 (previously an R2400) with the latest 6.57 driver. I am using LR 2.4 (64bit) and CS4. I have been afflicted with the dreaded "dark prints" since the R2400 and LR 1.0. Immediately after the update, I opened LR and proceeded to print a sample photo from a preset used with Red River Arctic Polar Satin with the supplied RR icc profile. The printer dialog was NOT as expansive, "Printer Setup" was missing. I printed anyway, with the limited options, not being able to verify the options. The print left me awestruck. I have kept various samples from past experiments. This last photo was...stunning. It is a dawn landscape of the summer Maine coast. For the first time in my experience with LR and Epson, the print was accurate to the display. The colors are accurate and vivid. The detail in the foliage, flowers and rocks is much superior to the past samples. The ONLY difference in my process was the upgrade to 10.6! I was concerned with the difference in the print dialog. Reading this thread and others (including the Epson website), it was recommended to install Rosetta as part of the optional post installation. I did the install. The options (and previous selections) for the printer dialog REAPPEARED as with 10.5.8! I printed another sample of the same photo. It was happily identical. I then printer the photo in CS4 with the "same" setting. The print was identical to the LR print.
I am one happy camper.

If you haven't already done so, install Rosetta support. That being said, the R800 wasn't fully updated for Leopard, therefore support in Snow Leopard is doubtful.
Sadly Rosetta was one of the first avenues I strode along. So, caught in the trap of progress, I'll wait a couple of days, until I have to print something properly, and then do a full revert to Leopard. Ha.
I don"t use a Mac, but a good rule of thumb (for any OS) is not to
upgrade on Day One, and not to upgrade unless/until you are sure you
can get updated drivers/support for any critical components/hardware
that you have.
That's a big part of the cause of Windows Vista being seen as a mostly
failed OS.
It's why I won't upgrade to Win 7 for a while yet. Eventually I will
... after I see which of my required software needs a patch, to work
well with the new OS.
Ah well. Sad Saturday night, but brighter Sunday morning. The problem with the Epson R800 seems to centre around my custom profiles and Lightroom managing the printer. As I seem to recall was the crux when Leopard came on the scene. Switching off Lr as print manager and letting the R800 manage itself produced nearly the quality of previous output under Leopard and using a custom profile for Premium Glossy paper. Just a hint more magenta; but easily compensated for with the Tint slider. There also did not seem to be any difference between using a USB connection and that of a FireWire: contrary to that noted by another contributor. So at least a way forward for Monday morning.
I use Photoshop CS3 on a new MacBook Pro. I just installed Snow Leopard. I downloaded the new pinter driver from Epson. Photoshop seems to work well until I try to print on my Epson Photo 2400 printer. Nothing happens after I press print - the printer icon flashes briefly but the print process does not start. I was able to print successfully on the same printer using iPhoto. Any suggestions?
Did you install Rosetta?
When I opened my Mail account after installing Snow Leopard, a menu popped
up indicating Rosetta needed to be installed before using Mail again. I
approved installation and think it did. However, I can't seem to find
Rosetta in Finder. Do I need to install it from the the disc?
Well personally i don't think Apple fixed this HUGE bug (if its apple's fault…),
people here in the thread that talkn about Snow doesn't seem to really know nothing about the RGB printing issue we are talking about.
I suspect nothng changed. But i'm not gona beta test this out.
Anyone using HP here ?
I have no idea if HP (B8850 for me) made new drivers and if they are provided in the OS. They're not on HP's site at least.
a user confirming what i say :
neuelex- FWIW, the OP is asking about issues with Lightroom and Epson printers. You are asking a question about HP printers and making a statement about a thread from the InDesign forum. I suggest you either start a new thread regarding HP printers or continue your RGB comments in the other forum.
I followed their directions and downloaded the recommended driver. The
printer works fine with every program other than Photoshop CS3.
I solved the problem. I reloaded Rosetta from the Snow Leopard disc, turned
off the printer then turned it on after attaching it to the computer via a
usb connection. Thanks for your concern.
Glad it worked for you. In the case of the R2880, my guess is that the driver is labeled as "compatible" for 10.6.x, because it requires Rosetta to work. I'm hoping the R2880 has a large enough installed user base to have the driver redesigned to be operable "native" to 10.6.x and not need Rosetta.
Happiness!
After searching the Epson site, I found a driver for my R1800 that appears to be the correct one. After doing a recalibration with my ColorMunki, the printout is identical to what I can see on my monitor! The available options are not quite the same as the earlier (Leopard) version, but I was able to get the same results.
I also found the correct driver for my 4870 Scanner - two victories in one day! And the HP 6100 worked right away without any problems.
I'm still struggling with the old Color 740, but I first have a network issue to resolve, since it is connected on the USB port on my AirPort Base Station. Since I only use it for document backup, I can live without it.
Epson doesn't make it easy, but it looks like I am back in business.
Dave
Dave, can you post a link to the driver that worked for your R1800? I am very reluctant to upgrade to Snow Leopard after how much work it took to get my prints to look like the screen - I don't want to start that mess all over again.
Will do ...
I have a few chores to take care of today, but as soon as I get a few moments I will retrace my steps and find the link to the driver that I am using.
It doesn't provide all of the options which the earlier driver had - I read someplace that Epson limited the options in order to keep the file size down, and I feared the worst when I first tried to use it. However, after profiling my paper and printer with ColorMunki, I was very happy with the results.
Stay tuned.
Dave
OK, I just retraced my steps to the Epson website, and here is the link to the driver I downloaded:
(Type it in as a single string of characters, without any spaces or returns)
The download shows up as "Epson Installer" on my hard drive. When I "Get Info" it shows up as epson13186.dmg.
As I mentioned earlier, I did the install routine and then used my ColorMunki to profile my paper with the R1800. When in LR, I selected the new profile and held my breath while the first print came out - happiness! It looked great!
Hope this helps!
Dave
