editing help

Please take a look at the attached photo I have been trying in repair the waterfall that is blown out.  I have tried burning and any number of other techniques.  If anyone has a idea what I could do please help

    not much can be done about it. The Red channel still holds some information in the waterfall. Add a Channel Mixer adjustment layer, set it to Luminosity and add a Layer Mask so that it only affects the waterfall. Select the Monochrome checkbox and mix in something with a low Green and Blue but a lot of Red. Make sure that the total ends up at 100%.

    It's a beautiful photo.

     

    If you took it in RAW like you should you may be able to find more information in the blown out portion by reducing the opacity in camera raw.   If you are working in CS4 then do this.  Open the file in camera raw,  reduce the exposure until you get some information back in the white if there is any in there,  shift open the image that will open it as a smart object, duplicate the layer ctrl/cmd+j,  rastersize the duplicate layer,  double click on the bottom layer and you will go back into camera raw, reset the original exposure click ok, make a hide all mask on the duplicate layer and using a soft white brush on the mask paint in the blown out areas, you may need to blur the mask a little to make it blend better.
