first.. i apologize for going off-topic.
second, so far i've only used photoshop and catalyst... and if i don't misunderstood the question, i used the 'web-to-deploy' folder... :| sry, i'm new to the catalyst world`
(it is not hooked up as the main page yet -- it still needs some testing, proofreading and fixing some of the stray characters in DB encoding
Now, I am not a programmer, not even a "web designer" -- I design products, do advertising, photography, 3D renderings, video... So my knowledge is pretty vast but if not very deep in all places. I had some past dealings with PHP and mySQL, but by no means with anything close to having a grasp on things...
I did the old www.oceanpotion.com -- It was in a need for change, so I started working with Catalyst while it was still in beta... Little did I know, how big the job was going to be! -- It seems so easy, but because of the schizophrenic relationship with Flash Builder, I had to do the same things over and over... (This relationship can best be described as "my way or highway" from the perspective of Builder as relates to Catalyst)
Anyhow, I've worked on it for a few months. The goal was to have all text to be pulled from mySQL database... and I almost made it! There was one element that for some reasons just refused to be bonded -- (It seemed to work like all others, but the results were always blank -- Some stupid bug? -- Who knows!) The same database will be used for a regular html site, plus sites in other languages -- so this is the reason for going to Builder and PHP/mySQL
Btw. The site has only about 8 pages -- the rest is done with components...
So here it is -- Html5 -- Can you do this?
BTW. Ocean Potion makes best sunscreens in the world, so don't forget to cover up!
Actually, I misunderstood your message on first reading -- as you must have misunderstood my original question... I wasn't questioning the abilities of Flash/Flex, but those of HTML5... My example with the transparent object shows how much more you can do in Flash/Catalyst/Builder then in CSS3/html5 that Steve Jobs seems to be so excited about...
From a commercial artist point of view Catalyst, so far is the easiest way to create a simple custom website -- Even when comparing it to regular html editors...
Here is another example -- My daughter who is a jazz musician, created this for her school assignment in one weekend in Catalyst:
Yeah I also see a high potential in Flash Catalyst, sorry for the confusion or miss-understanding.
>From a commercial artist point of view Catalyst, so far is the easiest way to create a simple custom website -- Even when comparing it to regular html >editors...
Yeah indeed and you are free do design how you like to have it and not like css wants it to show.
I actually started with Flash years ago and than I came to a pint where I want to have things dynamically
Now after years of learning and experience I am building on a Flex-CMS / Shop System System where I can modify content online, direct in place, no backend etc.
have a nice day , btw . good looking stuff, I love video backgrounds
I am an architect and 3D animator of large scale architectural projects, and I have created a preliminary portfolio featuring some of my work over the last several years using Flash Catalyst. I had been waiting for a less "code-oriented" Flash creation product for some time, and I was ecstatic to finally see and use Flash Catalyst.
My site can be viewed here: http://www.3d2inc.com (hope that works as it does not appear to be a link as I type it) if it is not a true link - the address is simply 3d2inc.com
One thing I have to say - the site takes a while to load and I was not happy with the default preloader. After an exhaustive search for info on this subject, I downloaded the demo of Flash Builder 4 to try to create a new custom preloader which would work with my site. Well, not sure what to say other than I have spent more time trying to get my simple preloader to work than I spent on creating the entire web site - it is extremely frustrating and I think one of the problems is that Flash Builder 4.0.0 will not work with the latest Flash Player 10.1.
I am relatively new to coding, but I created a very cool preloader in Flash CS3, following a tutorial verbatim - imported the SWC file into Builder and proceeded to follow the tutorial verabtim again - but all I get are errors - and it won't tell me what the errors are - just that there are errors, and it won't show the preloader I made at all. It's very frustrating as I don't even need or want to learn AS or MXML coding - I just want a better preloader for my Catalyst website! Any new info on preloaders for Catalyst? I can't even find the code for the default preloader from Catalyst in Builder to delete it...
I hate the default pre loader as well, we should be able to have a few
I think the type on the website is a little small to be easily legible
to most users. Great concept and Nice website!
I have been using Catalyst quite a bit and have even been offering it
to some of my clients.
I have not had good luck with clients adopting to the flash 10 version.
"Everyone" is turned off by having to have all their viewers update to
flash 10 to see the site.
They are simply afraid potential viewers will just move on rather than
go through the install procedure.
I wish we could save it back a version.
For now I am having to go back to Flash and Dreamweaver for client
Thanks very much for the kind words Curtis - I appreciate your response very much. I agree the text is very small - it was a pixel font that only worked at 8pt, but I chose it mostly for the graphic affect anyway, as I did with the 1600px width, which is also "outside the norm" - or so I hear anyway... haha Most of my work comes from repeat clients so this site was something that was mainly just for me actually - although I will surely point new people at it, and the Flash Player 10.1 requirement is something that I am very concerned about.
I've been wanting to make a Flash web site for several years, but I have been making interactive presentations using a WYSIWYG web editor for years. I think I paid like $30 for that program 5 years ago and it did some of the same things that Flash Catalyst does now, except it was HTML. I've been waiting 5 years for Adobe to make a WYSIWYG Flash program - and it finally came in Catalyst.
I also wish there was at least some backwards compatibility from Catalyst though. Even the SWF files I created in Catalyst will not open properly in Flash CS3 or even Flash CS5. I had heard that you couldn't open Catalyst projects in Flash, but I was hoping maybe the SWF files were just regular SWF files - but apparently not. I have also tried several other ways to get the preloader I made in Flash CS3 to work with the Catalyst web site, including even purchasing a program that will supposedly "insert" one SWF file into another as a preloader (in addition to my bad experience with Flash Builder that I mentioned earlier) but I have had no success at all, and I suspect it is mostly due to compatibly and version issues, because of how new Catalyst is and with it using Flash 10.1. The demo version of Flash Builder that I downloaded does not seem to work with the Flash Player version that I'm required to use with Catalyst - I'm not sure that really makes any sense...
Unfortunately I can't fall back on Flash CS3 because I couldn't even begin to code all the things that I did with Catalyst - haha - although I do know much more about Flash now than I did before I used Catalyst, so that's good - and I'm learning more every day because of people like you and others on this forum.
Thanks again for the information and your kind response, Curtis.
here you find a video tutorial about how to create a Custom Preloader (including downloadable source):
>"Everyone" is turned off by having to have all their viewers update to flash 10 to see the site.
Regarding updating the FP to 10 , what is so hard about it for your Customers?
When they update they get a better and faster FP so they do themself something good.
Its just a click and its a small download.
This is a good tutorial if you have Flash CS4 or CS5 - I do not - so it is not very useful.
But if you do - it still would not help me - because he starts with a pre-built pre-loader in the flash project. Does not show how it was constructed for us that have never before been exposed to flash - like me. It turns me cold.
Looks like that this is working without Flash :
Another but with Flash
Thanks very much for the information. This was the tutorial I followed - I've actually done it twice now, step by step, but my version of Flash Builder (which is a demo version) just doesn't seem to work the way the tutorial (which is for Flex and Eclipse) does. I keep getting errors when I try to put my preloader name in the MXML part. I'm sure it's something I'm not doing correctly since I am very new to this level of coding and I don't even know about the necessary file structure and naming conventions etc. in MXML. This tutorial is obviously directed at people who are already familiar with Flex, which I am not. Wish there was a tutorial for beginners on this subject!
Regarding the upgrade - I completely agree with you. However in this day of "instant gratification" and "skimming mentality" thanks to the internet, there are many people who will not take the few seconds to do it. The whole reason that I even want a better preloader is that I am afraid that people won't wait the 7 or so seconds for my site to load, when they are looking at a plain empty bar! haha
Thanks again - I appreciate your help very much.
> I am afraid that people won't wait the 7 or so seconds for my site to load,
Another preloader wont make your site loading faster.
If you want to increase the performance of your site , I think you have to optimize data loading so that the main swf is not that big and that you dynamicly load data when its needed. How does Catalyst include data ? by embedding or loading on demand ?
I guess you have to dive deeper into flex to do so ?
Regarding that first Tutorial, its from December 18, 2007 and therefore not compatible to Flex4 without modification.
Here is also usefull info about how to built a Flex4 preloader:
My site is as optimized as it can be without cutting out content. My point was not that it will load faster with a better preloader, but that it will look better, be more engaging, and relate to the actually web site more and thus keep people engaged for the entire 7 seconds.
That is a good point you make, as I had questions about embedding things or not. All of the graphics in the site are linked, but my question was should everything be "visible" on the first state or not? I tried to make the bigger components not visible in the first state - and the site loaded much faster - but then when you clicked on something, there was a delay for the state to change. I decided that I would rather have everything load in the first state, so that once the site loaded everything worked as it should immediately. I guess I would rather have the delay at the initial site loading, rather than have delays when you click on things in the site...
Any thoughts on this guys? Thanks for the input.
It turns you cold? haha That's a good one. I sympathize with you and I understand what you're saying, although I do know how to use Flash enough to make that preloader. My issue is that I own and use Flash CS3 and that's what I used to make my preloader - anyone think maybe that is why it won't work in this tutorial? Does it have to be created with CS4 or CS5? I would think that the older version should still make a file that will work - but I could be wrong. I know how Adobe and others are always forcing people to upgrade perfectly good programs practically every year...sigh
Here's a link to my website. http://www.nakean.com The home page, portrait page and latest shoot page are all Catalyst. Any ideas on how to split up my portrait page to make the load time faster. It's slow as molasses.
Here is my site, it is my portfolio. Designed in Illustrator and done in FC. I made the contact form in Flash Pro. Let me know what you think. Tell me if it loads quick or slow. Also there seems to be a loading problem with the contact form. If anybody has a solution for it, please let me know.
Looks good - a little slow loading initially, but not too bad, although I have a very fast connection here.
On the contact form it appears that you have to click on the border (rather than in the open space) to activate the ability to type in input.
The contact form was there - but input into the spaces was not immediately possible - as I said it appears that the border is the "clickable" part of the graphic, when I clicked in the open space it would not "activate" the input for the space. Clicking directly on the border was the only way to activate the input.
Made this the first weekend I had FC (it only took about 12 hours) -- what an amazing program! It also works on my friends Android phone, which I was shocked at -- wake up Steve Jobs, html5 is just not a designers tool (flash catalyst most certainly is). I cant imagine how painful this would have been to create using actionscript (three weeks at least I think) -- eesh.
Post more examples guys! Let's see some boundaries being pushed, this was only my first try, I can't wait to dive in again and create something even better!
And Adobe -- custom load bar tool please (already waiting for CS6)!!
Sarah, if you're thinking of getting it so you can make cool widgets to put into Captivate or Articulate, forget it. It doesn't work that way... I'm not sure WHAT you could do with it, except built WEB SITE wireframes
They should really change the advertising that says you can build Widgets with this... you can, but they don't work anywhere.
I bought it and love how it works, but am sorely disappointed with its usage possibilities.
